Last november we bought a Mk2 Camper. It is in need of some tlc and an engine rebuild. The Pinto (Sierra 2.0) is smoking badly. Here it is in it's place for the next months:
I've removed the front to get acces to the engine and enginebay:
The whole engine bay was covered with sticky anti-corrosion stuff (ML) which was handpainted in white. Very ugly and had to be removed, not a very fun job to do....luckely I had some help from my sons scraping it off:
After a while they took the engine apart and let the old man scrape the enginebay...taking the engine apart is much more fun.

The Pinto engine was leaking oil everywhere. It had been taken apart and put together without the original gaskets. Instead every part was sealed with a liquid gasket and over tightened and pressed out. I think this happened not to long ago because the inside was reasonably clean...
Slowly getting there;

They like the trannie a lot and have fun helping me out. The pics were taken during their christmas vacation.

I've cleaned the floor of the cabin this evening and removed some surface rust, nothing serious. I also took the caps in floor out to check the inside of the beams, no rust. Now I can start rebuilding with no worries. Many of the pictures I've seen on the forum scared me!! Those Trannies can rust!

You are very luck, very little rust there. Keep it in the family!

@irishtransit: To be honest, it did!
@fredtransit: I'll keep her inside when not in use.

There is still a lot to do; Mostly it's cleaning parts. I had to paint the underbonnet area so I can start on the interior. All the electrical leads are drawn back in the cabin and have to be in their place again so I can insulate the firewall and floor. The engine is waiting for gaskets and a distribution set, these are coming from the UK because the engine parts are almost twice as expensive in the Netherlands. I sold the original seats from the Transit (a seat and a bench). Those were included by the previous owner when we bought her. They were sold to another couple who are restauring a Mk1 camper, so they are well in their place. I used the money to buy a electric adjustable interior from a bmw 750i with a Pullman cloth, we'll be sitting like royalty .

So it's been a while, I've been very busy with my work and couldn't make time for the camper. There's been a little time in between so it wasn't a complete stop.
I started out with the interior and made a thick isolation from the floor up to the top of the dashboard, that should reduce the noise. The mock up for the seats was a lot of work, mostly to get the right position.

The most of the cabin is carpetted in black now.
The seatbelts in the floor:
A nice job for my wife; pealing off 5 layers of wallpaper...I don't know what kind of glue was used but it took her 2 days.....
I helped her out a bit...

I covered the walls in the back with carpet to get it nice a cosy....
And finally started on the floor, made of pvc.
Only a black or grey lining to do to get a classic look.
