G`day folks Finally got started on the van, over the last week i`ve stripped the engine bay (my back wont let me work for more than a half an hour or so before it gives out on me, so what used to be a few hours work has turned into a weeks work). Stripped out all accessories and bolt on parts, only need to drop the tailshaft and disconnect the transmission linkages. Heres where i am so far And the tight squeeze in the trans tunnel As you can see its damned oily, its going to get all external gaskets replaced and an aerosol rebuild, a good trans service and the engine bay stripped, all rust repaired and painted in the original white. Going to be a fairly long process with my back but it will happen, got an electronic dizzy to fit and will clean up all odd holes in the engine bay. My plan is to do all the door interiors and jambs before i get started on the exterior of the old girl. Well enough of boring you, catch you round the boards. Cheers Troppo

OK finally got the engine and trans out,yes i know it has taken a while but when my back says i need to stop i need to stop, so i cant do more than a half an hour or so at a time. Anyway i got a real surprise, it looks like i have a reco trans which is a bonus (it might lok a little grubby but the pan gasket was brand new, rear seal is too and the fluid looked like it came straight out of the bottle). saves me a lot of work. can you spot the leaks? lol So next i split the engine and trans and get to work with gaskets and aerosols for the engine rebuild then prep and paint the engine bay. Cheers all Troppo

well, its a 250ci crossflow, a lot bigger (in capacity) and more powerful than a pinto so there are pro`s and cons. It has more power and torque than a pinto which is good for when the backs full of crap, but on the other hand it uses a fair bit more fuel than a pinto and its a bitch to work on the back 3 cyls (even with the cabin hatch open). Its got a C4 trans behind it and though its geared fairly low it will pull like nobody`s business. The one thing i dont like is the fact that it is geared so low, it starts to scream at about 110kmh (about 66mph)but apart from the transmision they are all original parts and the speedo reads pretty much spot on so i really mustnt grumble

You were lucky to score a c4 trans didn't most of them come out with the Borg Warner box?

Looks like the manual i have says the C4 was standard, doesnt have any other trans options other than a three speed manual. There may be differences in other models.

Yeah they are the stronger box makes sense really Going to give it a service since its out, and a bit of a clean up. Cant work out why its got that patch of muck on top of it though. Going to replace all the trans cooler lines as all the rubber sections are shagged and one of the bundy tubes has a kink in it. Then its on to the big job, degreasing the block, going to be a three or four step process i reckon. Cheers Troppo

Not going to be fun, i hate grinding cast iron

Well spent the last couple of days giving the engine a bath (cant do too much at a time because of my back) and couldnt believe the change, definately needs a set of gaskets i think before after When i pulled the trans off the engine i was confronted with a brand new torque converter so i`m sure its had a fully reco`d trans in it recently. Progress may be a little slow but progress is progress
