Can't suss this one chaps.... Recently bought a 73 MK1 diesel Minibus. Putting fuel in it takes an age it's so slow... and I mean maybe a litre a minute slow and if you try to rush it you get 'diesel feet', an expensive and smelly experience.. So I took the tank out expecting to find a golf ball or something jammed in the filler pipe. I found nothing, nice and clean. The 1/2" vent pipe from the top of the tank to the filler neck was clean and clear. It's so damn slow I've temporarily rigged up an internal tank or risk a parking ticket at the pumps...
Any ideas??? Also does anyone know how many capacity options are available for a MK1 as I could do with a larger tank??? Thanks..

The more direct the filler tube ( less bends ) the faster you can fill

Could be the modern pumps not liking the tank filler neck. Does it click off a lot?

I agree regarding the less bends and to fill [or try to] you have to literally dribble the juice in, not a hope of full bore....Maybe I should have got out more but I've never seen a tank that fills from the bottom upwards, i.e. the filler tube enters the bottom of the tank so newly introduced fuel has to displace what's already in a partially filled tank therefore the only escape of air above the fuel has to exit via the rubber vent pipe not simply pass by the pump nozzle.. It's got me beat...

Chassis cab tank fills at the top, the van one's filler is on the back edge to match with the filler hole in the bodywork.

Cheers Fred.. Guess I'll put it all back together and see what occurs until I can get a larger tank made to replace the spare wheel space underneath...

I'm sure my Mk2 fills from the top, has someone put an odd tank into it at some point? Take a couple of blocks of wood and drive onto them next time you fill up to tilt it to the side - see if that helps? Also if it is a wierd filler arrangement it should fill pretty quick with a virtually empty tank as the air could get out - till you get to the point where it can't... Just another thought - old diesel used to foam when you filled up quickly - its not doing that is it and giving the impression of being full?

Thanks for your thoughts. As this van is a Malteser who knows what bits came from where!!! I'd quite forgotten how much fun foaming diesel was all those years ago... but deffo not that. I'll try blocking it up one side when I get a chance...

You can fit the 68L LWB tank, even in the SWB.

Ah, when you say fold out step, do you mean minibus style, that pops out from under the side door? Didn't know you had one of them! Short answer, sadly no. Camilla has one, and as far as I know there's an extra small tank to allow for it! I don't have any problem filling up though.

Alas I kinda thought that Fred as yes, she's a minibus.... recon my only hope is to either get a large tank made to go to the rear or find something that'll fit!... 90 - 100 litres would be nice as I brew my own vegoil and on a long trip won't need to get shafted at the pumps :-)

Do you have a Bosch pump then?

I popped a Merc lump in Fred, experience has shown that the pre-computer 4 pot 2 litre engines are a 'fit and forget' job. Slow they are but they'd run on butter of you could shove it down the pipe :-)
