Hi I took the old girl out for a long run today, mostly motorway driving. This is the first long run after a lot of work on the engine. It ran very cold for a long while then the temp guage went hot. On the way back the temperature gauge read normal (mid way) then went to hot and coolant boiled bit of steam !!!. However on coming off the motorway within what seemed to be a split second the temp gauge dropped to cold. My gut feeling is this could be a thermostat issue. Any thoughts /advice welcome.

Take the thermostat out do a similar run and compare the results if it runs at a constant temperature then it would be the thermostat

Almost sounds like a blockage somewhere. Try putting the heater on when the temp goes up, the heater matrix is another little cooling rad. Better you boil than the engine!

Could it be an airlock that shifted when you came off the motorway? Have you checked the water level since, if it has dropped by a significant amount then that might be the cause.

Might be worth throwing a can of radiator flush in it at the same time, in case theres a piece of crap floating through the water galleries.

I found it did need two pints of water have run it again and gauge remains on cold.. I have not been able to repeat the over heating. I think next I will replace the thermostat and as troppo suggests will flush the system at the same time.

If it is now not heating up it would suggest the thermostat is now stuck in the open position.

I think next I will replace the thermostat and as troppo suggests will flush the system at the same time. Any visible water leaks? Take a close look at the engine on tickover. Look above any wet areas as obv water runs down. Favourites are hoses rubbing, dodgy jubilee clips and splits next to them. Also check your core plugs for rust.

Checked for water leaks all ok and flushed the cooling system. Took the thermostat out and tested in boiling water seems to work. Re-filled and took for a drive the temp gauge still reads cold. However on restarting the engine the gauge moves to normal and then drops back to cold. Unfortunately the new stat was the wrong one so still on the look out for a replacement. I think it may just stick so will replace when I can find one also may be worth changing the temp guage sensor perhaps it's just not giving the the right reading.

It always will, the engine is still hot and the water will absorb the heat, but theres no water flowing through the block or radiator to get rid of the heat. Its not unusual for the temp to rise after you turn the engine off.

Flushed the system and replaced the thermostat all running fine now so thanks for the advice.
