Need to pick some brains please chaps.
I've got a gorgeous 10k miles 74 mk1 with a rather gutless 1700 v4 behind a flat front. I've got my eye on a rather sad looking mk2 motor home which i'm hoping has a 2 litre pinto under the hood.......... I think you probably know where this is going? Will the pinto and box go in without changing my perfect rust and dent free bonnet and front panel for a bullnose?
Would the diff have a better cruising ratio than my current unit? Ask me about cortinas and mustangs and I can tell you alsorts but Transit spec's are new to me so help appreciated please.
Thanks,
Col.

As it seems you are happy with mechanical work, think about changing the back axle. For some reason best known to the German fire service, the diff ratio on the fire vans is pants. Many people complain about the engine screaming and going nowhere. Between a proper 2L essex V4 and a better axle ratio you would be better off than you are now. Later options are a small modern diesel or a zetec. If you go the pinto route it's likely you will need a bullnose front end, but you can fit a pinto with a flat front

My 78 2.0 pinto ex german fire van is screaming it's nuts off at 50mph. So its definitely the rear diff that restricts it.
Which back axle is best to look for?

How can I tell which diff is which, is there something on the casing to ID it?

There may still be a little ally tag held under one of the diff cover bolts, it has the ratio on it

Thanks. I've got no problem with mechanics or body/fabrication as I built my mustang (avatar pic) from a bare shell and restore cars all the time. i'm going to give the carb a strip and see how she is after that. It doesn't have to fly but then I would like to tow a car trailer with it as i'd like to trailer my mustang or mk1 Cortina from time to time on trackdays and things.
I was wondering about a diesel. Are they a shorter engine than the pinto? Are we talking the engine out of the smiley tranny?

Nope you will definately need a bull nose for a Di - thats the one that went in the mk3,4,5 transits as well as the late mk2's (I think) or modify the bulkhead to allow it to sit further back..

DR's right, the Di is twice as long as the V4, and a bigger engine than the pinto so you won't get it to fit with the flat front. You could go for a modern little diesel, but they may no have the torque for towing.

To fit Pinto you will need to move the engine and box back at least two inches, use modded engine mounts with fabricated mounts to the chassis as the V4 sits on a crossmember. You will need a fabricated gearbox crossmember as the Mk1 box hangs from the top. I use a modded mk1 escort x/ member with a Mk2 Transit box, gear lever hole needs to be moved, bulkhead will need massaging at the rear to allow room for the back of the engine. Use a Mk3 diesel Transit radiator with matching header tank and revised hoses to suit. Remove the fan and use an electric one in front of the rad. That's about it, if you need more info let me know

Thanks for the advice chaps. looks like I may have bagged myself a couple of v6s, one front sumped out of a mk4 zephyr and the other a 3.1 capri with 4 speed box. i'm hoping that'll go in easier than the pinto.

It looks a possibility as the V6 is only 2 pistons longer.

You won't get the v6 in on the standard engine mounts, you will still need to move it all back. The v6 is wider than the pinto so you will have to attack the firewall too
