Hi all,
If you saw my post a while ago I got my gearbox replaced on my MK2 dormobile (Pacemaker).
I ended up getting a second hand 5 speed box from a bloke in Essex - Muttley okay'd him - which matched the old box. Anyway the transmission place said it was in good nick and the garage replaced it, done a few hundred miles in it since and everything seems hunky dory.
However, the speedo is reading 10mph more than the van is actually doing (checked via satnav). It also makes a high pitched squealing noise at certain speeds, seems to be in the 25-35 mph mark. Its intermittent as well, sometimes its fine and then other times it rears its ugly head.
I was wondering if this was something to do with the speedo cable not being properly connected at the gearbox end? I had read that on a few places. I would get a video but its off road at the minute. Is this is an easy fix?
Also they failed to replace the gear lever with the replacement one I got, which was much better than my original (pretty janky when changing gear especially in 1st to 2nd). Again, how difficult would this be to do? I don't mind getting the garage to do it as long as its not extortionate.
I would take it back to the garage that did the work but they are in Basingstoke and I'm in Devon right now!!
Thanks for your thoughts.

Speedo may need a different plastic drive cog, does the gearbox have the correct oil in it, the type 9 uses a thinner grade oil.

I emphasised to the bloke to use the oil that Bentleyboy (can't remember his name) recommended to me but I'll double check when I take it into the garage for a service. Could the drive cog be affecting the incorrect speed as well?

Yep you need the correct gear that matches your diff to get your speedo to read correctly.
The type 9 used to need a specific synthetic gear oil otherwise selecting 1st when stationary with a cold gearbox was very difficult.

Cheers dodge. What exactly is the oil required? I can't remember now. I did tell both garages but you know what they are like.

I've just looked for the genuine ford stuff and it appears to have been discontinued, I remember it was the first synthetic gear oil I had come across and was amazed as it was so thin at room temperature. It looks like the current recommendation is either a semi or fully synthetic GL4 75w90 oil. The GL4 is important - do not use GL5 the additives aren't compatible with the box apparently. 2 bottles used to overfill a box, I think they were a litre each, there never used to be a drain plug though, these days you could probably suck it out with a vacuum extractor through the filler plug.

Cheers dodge. Im pretty sure I remember telling them to put in 75w90 but I don't think I specified whether it was GL4 or GL5. I think its probably worth buying a bottle or two online and handing it to the garage when they do it, just in case (i'd give it a go myself but I'm short on time before the leaving date).

Pull the little plastic drive out and see what colour it is, I have a selection of drives.

Will do. Stupid question but where would I find it ? Or will it be in the Haynes manual?

Follow the speedo cable down to the gearbox mate, it's at the end of it. The type9 won't be in the Haynes Book of Lies as the Mk2 didn't have a 5 speed.

Haha cheers Fred! Is the Haynes manual that bad?

The problem is Haynes always dismantled lovely rust free grease free examples. Also Ford do like to muddy the waters by mixing and matching parts

Yeah my van is a bit of a patchwork of bits to say the least!

Out of interest I was under the van doing some wiring yesterday and was having a look at the gearbox. There are 2 cables running to a with a circular 2 pin plug that plugs in the end (propshaft end) of the box, on the NS of the gearbox.
These cables run into one of those quick release plugs and then heads towards the engine bay. I know this isn't drive cog, but what is it out of interest?

Oh yeah squealing seems to have desisted mostly, could it just be the new clutch wearing in?
