I have a weird noise, well, I think I have, but my hearing is pretty shot and isn't half as good as my imagination. If I turn my hearing aids down and turn up the radio, the noise is muted so it can't be very loud in real life.
I think it could be wheel bearing(s) but I have no idea if it's front or back. How can I check them?
Do the half shafts come out the same as I have done before on a Mk2 CORTINA? four bolts and a slide hammer?
I'm really hoping it's not the diff or the gearbox. Could be anything (or nothing)

Wheel bearing noise is a droning that comes on about 30 to 40 moh and rises and falls matching speed. Front wheelbearings can be adjusted/ greased, rears are fully floating and lubricated by axle oil. Half shaft comes out with just a smack with a 2lb hammer.

I can't hear the noise properly as I'm practically deaf. I believe I can hear something though. How could I tell if the front bearings were the problem? Would I feel anything by revolving the jacked up wheel? I plan to take out the half shafts at the rear to check them, they presumably are bolted in.

You might want to try jacking up and spinning the wheel, listen for excessive grinding, you might find that easier ๐

well I'm going to try that, but I probably won't be able to hear it. I might be able to detect vibration or roughness though so It's worth a shot.
Although I have really good quality hearing aids, it's hard to detect what sounds are and where they are coming from. It's hard to explain the problem. When my Capri had a failing half shaft bearing, a guy came to see it and said "can't you hear that? It's really screaming" I tried to explain all I could hear was a wall of sound and couldn't pick out what he was referring to from within the general tyre and engine noise etc. I think I can hear a noise from the Transit, but my imagination takes over and plays tricks, you understand? I can't evaluate if the sound is real or how loud it is, I can make it louder by turning up my aids, but that solves nothing as all the other noises get louder too. I'm thinking I wouldn't be able to hear the radio if the noise was really loud but I can hear the radio as clearly as I ever do (which isn't that clear actually)

Single wheel halfshaft is just held by wheel, sharp smack on the end with hammer will bounce it out.

Understand CT, would a stethoscope with the wheel work better? (Obviously not while driving) ๐

Understand CT, would a stethoscope with the wheel work better? (Obviously not while driving) ๐ Will be an interesting experiment! will report back! What gets me , is my hearing is dreadful with loads of tinnitus but I have a Bluetooth device that directs my TV sound directly into my hearing aids and I can hear almost perfectly using it. I've no idea how that works and why my hearing aids on their own don't produce the same result! (it's a right pain by the way, I blame Ozzy Osbourne, My Ma always said I'd go deaf listening on headphones!

The wheel holds the halfshaft in when in motion

Digital sound conversion ๐Iโm not sure they do a blue tooth stethoscope but will look ๐ True its digital coversion direct in a direct link in digital waveform, not an analoge soundwave(air movement driven) Corktina, do you have anything to record and then play back through tv with sound to listen through the bluetooth devise?

I don't think it would work unless you could plug it direct into the little white and red sockets and I can't find them on the Transit. Even if you could, the problem is sorting out which noise is which.
Sometimes the most odd noises get picked up and fed through my Aids, it can give a quite unreal picture of what's happening soundwise, and I'm hoping that's the case here. It seems the more you think there's a noise, the more you hear it and it could be the wind or the tyres or the K&N or the fridge rattling etc.

well I jacked it up and I can't feel any roughness and the only noise is what you'd probably expect, bit of a rumble here and there. Tried running it with the wheels up and seemed smooth, took it for a test run and heard nothing. It must be my imagination. Surely I'd hear it above the engine noise, and I can hear that OK! Possbily it only makes a noise during a long fast run?
Might have to find a mechanic to check it overโฆ..
