I bought this about 2 months ago from a damaged vehicle auction for not very much. Always liked the look of them, and this one was less than 12 months old, with only 11000kms on the clock. Has taken a good hit to the LH side from the LH side, and this has pushed the LH chassis leg across to the right, and given it a good bend in the process. Triggered all of the airbags. Strangely enough, it still drove fine, with no suspension damage. I have stripped it back, and have the parts to repair it now. It will be going in for repairs in about 2 weeks. Interestingly, it is FWD, but I am quite sure it is based on the old Mk6/7 SWB floorpan. The engine bay is MASSIVE! You could fit a straight 6 engine in there and make it RWD, if you were that way inclined as bought: destickered and cleaned hanging out with some old girls! what do you think would look good in there?!

The Custom is a stand alone model, different from Mk6/7, nice vans though.

The Custom is a stand alone model, different from Mk6/7, nice vans though. Yes it is a different van. But had a good look at a Mk7 today (RWD) and the floorpan and front suspension is almost identical, many parts are shared. A bit like the Mk2 to Mk3 transition I guess? Didnt expect that.

NZ is going into complete lockdown tomorrow for at least 4 weeks to try and slow down the spread of COVID-19, so I will have a bit of spare time on my hands. Apart from a garage full of Mk1's and Mk2's, I thought I would take a little time and get this thread up to date. Gives me something to do, and you guys hopefully something interesting to read if you end up locked up at home.(which by the way I think is a good idea given the circumstances of this nasty virus!) So onwards with the story..... Before the stripdown, I had bought a set of projector Halogen lights, to replace the broken base halogens. Gave them a quick test to see if they would work, they did! Then the stripdown began. Everything forward of the bulkhead was removed, as well as the subframe and front suspension. You can see in these next pictures the LH chassis rail is quite bent!

Is the chassis jig at work? It should keep you busy as a project for a little while anyway!

Is the chassis jig at work? It should keep you busy as a project for a little while anyway! no that is at the Panelbeater's shop that does my work for me. That is a project post-lockdown, and will become my daily driver once finished. The Mk1's and Mk2's are all at home, and they are keeping me busy in this downtime

Incredible stuff ...what's it like having all that workshop space...heaven I bet...love viewing yr stuff ...well done and thanks for sharing 👍👍👍 Thanks Not enough garage space though, I need more! Looking at getting an extension built Making good progress on the van. All mechanical work done now, and I took it for a quick drive up the road, all seems okay, apart from a few warning lights on the dash which will need resetting. Been fitting the 'bodywork" for the last week or two, it is a complete PITA to fit, but is starting to look quite good now

Looks good - is that all bonded on then?

yep pretty much! Front and rear bumpers attach as normal, wheel arch flares and side sills bonded on (with some support brackets screwed on the underside of side sills. Was a right PITA to fit it all. I have read reports of the parts falling off, and can see why too. if the prep isn't done right, there is only a bead of adhesive that is holding it all on! All seems really solid at the moment, so we will see how it goes
