Hi - I'm a real novice when it comes to vans but I'm considering buying a transit mk2 1985 - I'm a little concerned because their have been 10 previous registered keepers. Is 10 too many for a camper of this age? I initially thought it was but not sure now. What I'm really asking is if this sounds reasonable? A part from this - the van is nice (good condition) as far as I can tell.
Old vehicles can have loads of owners, some fall in and out of love with them rather quickly. Its not necessarily the vans fault, just that you have to really love Transits to own (and keep) one. I do and I have 6 of 'em
Come see me for all your Transit associated needs!
Yeah some of ours have 10 owners though its more common with commercials. It could be a camper gets too small over a relitively short time. A new family member comes along and something bigger is needed! You can get former keepers details from the DVLA.
I've often found keepers can get bumped up by people who buy and sell cars as a side venture, as they rarely use the traders slip and end up submitting the whole v5.
Also 10 keepers really has no reflection on a vehicle this age, it would only matter on a desierable classic where you really want low keepers, low miles full history to "complete" the car and make a secure investment. One owner low mile car is the holy grail but at a cost.
The mileage on a car is a much better indicator. Though a bit different on these old girls to confirm with their small clocks......my 84 Apparantly only has 33k showing on the clock haha
Hi - I'm still hoping to buy the vehicle but was told today that it had failed its mot as a result of excessive corrosion on the nearside and offside rear (front) suspension spring mountings and would require welding. Its mk2 1985 - I have very little knowledge of campers - does anyone know how big an issue that is. The owner is very accommodating and says that he will get it fixed so that it passes mot. I'm mostly concerned safety and would worry about taking my family in something that is dangerous - but I have no idea if this is. When I hear the word welding...
I am tempted to think the tester either wasnt used to Mk2s or was looking for something to fail on. As there are no advisories it souds like a good un but hard to tell without seeing it. The only long term cure is to completely replace the spring hanger. New ones not available but the Mk3 spring hanger can be made to fit
If its been anywhere down south it may have been a backpackers van at one point, 3 tours of Europe and 3 different owners a year isn't too uncommon for them while they last. 10 owners wouldn't really bother me.
Fancy a chinwag? This live chat box is just for you!
