Guys, thanks very much for your replies. Fred, thanks very much for your offer of your truck. How much would it cost me for you to go over to Germany to bring one back for me with your truck please? They certainly seem cheaper over there to buy but I'm a novice when it comes to buying a vehicle abroad and don't have a clue whats involved and what other costs/paperwork are required. I couldn't go myself as I don't have a passport, hard to believe in this day and age I know! I would like one of those ex German fire truck transits ideally, that's why I was going to go for Ken B's. My eldest lad is mad on fire vans/trucks so thought it an ideal excuse to have one and combine my interest in transits along with my lads interest in fire engine vehicles! Is there a site where they can be easily found or am I better of just looking at German ebay? Thanks again guys for your help.

Flight out. Rail bus fare to the town. *Vendor will probably pick you up from town or airport. Say 100 quid for export TUV plates and insurance. (I'm 10 years out of date) Fuel back. Overnight in a hotel (about 1/2 the price here) Ferry ticket.
If you aren't up for an adventure, PM Fred to discuss prices.

Cheers for that. As stated I can't go myself due to the lack of a passport! I have been emailing the vendor and he has been most helpful, just waiting for him to get back with a price for shipping over, he says he has shipped a few over, you have to be very trusting that you are going to get what you have paid for after shelling out the money upfront. Would be good to get a price from someone in this country to collect it too just out of interest.

Yes, there is a big helping of trust. Just as there is in England. What's the seller's feedback like?
You can also ask him for references if he is a trader.
In this country, you could get an expert opinion from the AA (I think). I can probably find a company that will inspect the motor in Germany if you wish.
I expect he would accept a non returnable deposit from you to hold it while you get it inspected.
Here's ADAC's postal address. ADAC are the German version of AA. Their contact page link is below their address. The contact page want's a street and a postcode. I would fill in their street but a different number and postcode, and then explain in my letter. Good luck.

If you send Fred a private message saying where the motor is, I daresay you'll get a quote RP. But don't mention those upstart Transits.

Thanks for that gpw. I have sent Fred a Pm. I have also asked someone local to me for a quote too and the vendor in Germany is getting back to me with some prices from his end. Have you had a look at the van in question? Looks ok to me and a early one too with very low miles.

Well the seller has got back to me with a price from his end to transport it from him to my door, 1,200 euro with insurance, didn't think that sounded bad. He's asking 3,250 euro for the van so do you think this would be my only costs involved or would I still need the export plates that you were on about at the beginning of the thread? I'm awaiting a reply from the seller regarding a couple more questions and then I will make a decision on what im going to do, I certainly would like it, it looks quite nice in pics and says it has a current test on it so should be as good as it looks I would've thought and it has done 12,000 kilometres.

£3600 in proper money delivered to your door with a German TUV sounds very tasty to me RP. ;D ;D ;D
When I was there normal German TUV's were much more technical than ours, they were only done at a Government inspection centre.
Unlike Brits, Germans tend to follow the instructions in the drivers manual.
If it was what I wanted, and I had the loot, I'd settle before someone else bought it.
You don't need to spend any more money than the guy's quoted as far as I can see. Paperwork here was the usual stupid stuff when I did one, but the only costs here were MOT and plates, and I think about £25 to the DVLA. Good luck. ;D
If anyone knows different, please speak up.

Thanks gpw, I'm going to go for it! Do you know if I would have to pay any vat/import duties for it to come into the UK? Or would my only costs be to the seller in Germany and then to dvla to get it UK registered?
I've been searching the net and can't find anything that gives a clear answer.

If there's any VAT to pay RP, it's in Germany. If it's a private sale, then no VAT. If it's a business sale, then there's VAT, but it should be inclusive in the price asked. If it's a business sale, you get a 12 month guarantee, so 99% of old car sales are private.
To be 100% sure that the price includes an VAT liable, ask the seller.
No other costs that I know of beyond the ones you mentioned.
No import duties or tax within the EU. ;D Only tax liability in the country purchased. If you have been quoted a price to your door, not other costs for transport, as far as I know. ;D

Cool, thanks for your reply. He's not said anything about tax so hopefully its included in the price he has quoted me all in, maybe I best just check first.
Just have to get on and pay for it now and then wait for it to arrive, he says it will be 1-2 weeks after he receives payment.
