Finally got my Mk1 beavertail to be in the workshop to get on with it, so far we have extended the chassis using donor sections of original chassis and some rather hefty box section, staggering the join in 3 places to spread the load. I've been doing the monkey work and my mate has been doing the welding cos hes faster and better at it than me lol
Now the chassis is all welded up and ready to go, I'm onto prep and paint and I want to do it properly, the plan is to scurf down the whole chassis back to good metal, wash it down with some tfr, give it a good coat of mordant solution then red oxide then chassis black does this sound right to you? I did look at using the 2 pack epoxy marine paint but apparently if you ever need to weld it again your stuffed?
Also wondered what you lot recommend for the inside of the chassis? I was planning on using waxoyl but again some have said it will be a bitch to weld again after if needed? heard other people recommend old engine oil, but some warn against it as it can be acidic?
once this is done it will be on to the cab, then once that's all over I can start on the recovery body lol

If you are going for a show vehicle read no further Stoney.
There is a product called Owatrol Oil. Not cheap but it kills rust. It goes on very thin, and sets like varnish. It penetrates all the cracks and crevices you can't clean, and the bottom of the craters where the wire brush doesn't get.
You can add it to oil based paints. I have painted Hammerite over hardened Owatrol, and so far, it's very happy.
Normal chassis black is probably the best natured paint to use. Experiment with it over Owatrol.
I've gas welded chassis sections with Waxoil or old engine oil inside, smokey, occasional pops. I did it outside, with a bit of a breeze.
Oil engine oil is filthy, I'd never use it.
Waxoil hardens over time.
I use Dinitrol or Supertrol to rust proof. Probably DINITROL ML3125 - old metal, penetrates through rust, contains inhibitors.
I do it outside with an atomizing body section spray gun, and make sure I am downwind.

Owatrol. Never heard of it but it sounds good. Muttley is a fan of some metal paint similar to hammerite but l cant remember what its called. Its intended for exterior metalwork like gates.

I find this sort of spray gun the best all rounder. I must have collected half a dozen guns, none of them are brilliant.

Point to note here, Transit chassis rust from the inside out more than outside in Spend some time drilling drain holes in any low points and give the whole chassis a good waxoyling. When I shortened Muttley 3 I washed the chassis inside before I welded it back together as loose flakes of rust hold dampness in one place causing a rust hot spot. Good tip also whilst welding chassis, turn the gas up a bit from your normal amount, big heavy welds need more protection from oxidising

You have to cut it in half, steam clean it after running a drain cleaning rod with stiff brush through it ;D

sorta did that, used a handbroom and a broom handle lol to be honest very little came out, the chassis is mint, still got its original paint under the waxoyl and when we cut the top off it was bright and shiny inside, well from the cab back anyhow.
done a few drain holes, the only bit Im worried about is where the box section is in the chassis, it might rot between the box and chassis.
