Might mot the truck as a chassis cab and get it weighed before I build the bed, that way I know how much weight I have to play with
Sounds the best idea to me Stoney. I suggest you get the front axle weighed, and then the back axle weighed seperately. Do you know how to work out the payload for each axle afterwards?
It's a good idea to stay in the cab while you get it weighed by the way.
I suggest you get the axle weights for a saloon car as well. That way, you can work our where it's centre of gravity is.

With regards to keeping as much bed as possible its more for future usability if I want to move something long and light, I'm not interested in creating purely a recovery truck more something thats capable of carrying as versatile a range of items as possible. I know I will have to make some compromises by doing this but hopefully not enough to make it unviable You wanna run before you can walk then Stoney?
Do you know the KISS Rule by any chance?

Cages are easy enough to knock together once you've sorted your truck Stoney. Simply use plywood for the floor.
If your overhang to wheelbase ratio is 1 ro 3 Stoney, then for every 300mm you raise your front wheels on ramps, you'll lower the tip of your beaver tail by only 100mm I'm afraid. Also, ramps come off your payload.
I live on the road between the ambulance station and their repair place. I often see ambos driving off towards the repair place with their backsides scrapping the floor. The kit is pretty heavy too.
KISS. - Keep It Sweet and Simple.

If I was building a beaver tail and wanted to use it as a multi function truck, I think make sure I could remove the last few feet of the beaver tail easily Stoney. .
Or make it so it hinges up like a tail board. . ;D
