Rust.... mostly the cross member across the rear and a few other places. Needs a track rod end, Tester reckoned he couldn't test emissions because the engine knocks....it doesn't no more than any Pinto does anyway.

took it to a body shop up the road from the test centre. Guy has a Mk2 escort rally car and loves pintos and also Mk2 Transits.... hopefully in good hands. He's going to do everything, even organise the Engineers report on the welding. Probably come in at around a grand, which isn't good but it will be in good nick then for a few years.
The tester reckoned he couldn't rev it to do the emissions because the engine is knocking.... my man checked it out and neither of us could hear a knock...

that's worst case....€400 he thought but then there's the engineers report and a few bits and the re-test
If you aren't getting that sort of money for your skills , then you aren't doing it right...

Sounds like you need a new test station mate. They don't know classics and don't want to test them. Take the hint, and your business elsewhere.

I'd rather it was safe Fred and they found significant rust that I didn't know about. It's tested as a commercial and they have had the Road Safety Authority on their case , so things have been tightened up. Having said that it passed on all the mechanical bits,(bar a track rod end) even the steering box which if they didn't know their classics they'd have failed it on as they are all kind of slack. They don't understand that pintos are rough old coarse things though.

I failed big time a few years back when new owners took over my usual mot place. They wanted welding where it was not needed as a structural failure, mutley came round and said himself that a lot of it was not necessary. He did it but I took it elsewhere to people that know older vehicles and have had no problems since. and yes safety must come first but some people do not understand steering boxes or even leaf springs and in my case a rusty rear valance should not be a failure. find a mot station that understands and likes older motors
