So I pulled into a car park and spotted a tidy coach built Mk2 phase1 camper. Although she had been through some serious tarting up, she's basically sound. A bloke turned up and asked if it was mine. It turned out he was hoping to buy it, and was waiting for the seller. We had a look over the outside. The only rust I could see was the top of the passenger wing. The front crossmember had been welded up, a basic job but solid. It was up for £2500, with a new test. I had already had a sneaky look at the DVLA online and found it hadn't been taxed since 2009! The seller arrived and when we got inside, it all went wrong. The seller said the camper 'needed a new roof'. No shit. At some point, somebody or something heavy had been on the roof, popping the rivets on the roof seam, splitting it and allowing the rain in. The resulting epic visible damp had spread a good two feet down the body. You could see it when you opened the cupboards, and the bathroom walls were bowed. When the seller asked me what I though, I had to say it would make a nice pickup. Then I had to take that back, when I noticed the camper conversion included cutting off the cab roof. I had to tell the buyer (who admitted to me he was green as grass when it came to campers) that it would take a lot of time and (if he got somebody else to do it) a lot of money. I left him discussing money with the seller, and my number in case he wanted more advice. He called me and said he's been offered the last price of £1,100 and was thinking about it!! Such a shame about the base chassis cab, if the cab roof hadn't been removed I would have been tempted myself.

Guess what? I now know where the camper came from. I was at the yard and the guy who runs a skip company there was complaining he had a ticket on a camper he used to own. When he showed me the paperwork, the penny dropped. It turned out his brother had dealt with the sale, but he thought he got about £150 for it!! Oh and the roof was like it when he got it, but it was kept in a barn so the leak hadn't done much damage. It's a small world ain't it?
