Drop one of your CVH seals in my letterbox next time you are going through Horley and I'll try it on one of my spares, only 1 of the spare heads has unleaded valve seats fitted so I want to hang on to that one.
It won't be straight away though, I'll not be back up North for a month or so.

Do they work for bottom end power as well as top end, I've got a couple of heads to play with... To be honest, the end of the guide in the port can be reduced considerably in length but you want to taper it down as it ends. Also you want to put in a wedge effect across the length that remains so as to not have a low pressure area behind the guide.

I have made an air tool that screws into the spark plug and holds the valves up so you don't need to remove the head to change the stem seals.

How do you get the seals in place Ralph?

You make something to lever down on the top of the valve springs and release the collets whilst having kittens incase you slip and drop one down an oil way. You could buy a purpose made tool to do it in the 80s.

You can stuff a load of rags into the spark plug holes at TDC as well

No you don't need to lever the valve spring down, you can buy a spring compressor that works from the top & contains the collets. I will try & get a picture. I have just changed the cam & stem seals on the engine going into my MK1.

Still confused. Do the VSS fit through the spark plug hole then?

No, the adapter screws into the plug hole & the air line holds the valves up then the valve spring compressor remove the collets & spring. & then change the stem seals.

So HOW do you change the VSS without taking the head off? Sorry if I am being thick.

Rags/air keep the valves in a closed position in head without removing head,so when you take spring/collet off valve stem from rocker cover side of head the valves don’t fall through guides onto piston face.enabling you to change VSS without removing head from block.

I was confusing the valve seat with the valve stem seal. Muttley explained it to me today. Lightbulb moment and I get it now

Now if you could replace valve seats without stripping the engine you could make a decent living
