My starter solenoid has seen much better days and if possible I would like a replacement.
I know motor factors don't do them.
Its a 2.5l 1986 diesel.
Its the type which is 'freestanding', mine is situated in the top left corner of the engine bay bolted to the engine bay, sort of above the starter motor.
Is this the sort of thing there is 'new' old stock for or would I be looking at a proper second hand one?
Thanks,
Harry

You should be able to get a replacement universal starter solenoid from a decent motor factors I would have thought?

Do you have a pre engaged starter, if you do then you can bypass the one on the body.

tried motorfactors for reg specific one but no luck, ill try for universal one though. Not sure on pre engaged starter. the van has actually been starting without the solenoid or cold start connected so maybe that means there is a pre engaged starter?

Excuse my ignorance - learning as I go - Whats a pre-engaged? Does that mean the solenoid is basically unnecessary?
Is it just a solenoid attached to the starter?
Also, I don't have any glow plugs. I thought diesels that age always had glow plugs but mine doesn't (my old 1987 trafic did). How does that work?

Your starter should have a solenoid on the side of it. If you go for a recon, don't be fobbed off with a piddly little thing that looks like it fell off a fiesta. They will try to tell you it's specially geared and a direct modern replacement. Go for a 10lb monster. Get a dead one if it's exchange. Pay the surcharge if you have to.

The solenoid is on the body of the starter, the one on the wing is superflous, no glowplugs on a di, thats the point of direct injection

Starter is fine I think. Like I said its been starting first time no problems ever, even when the van has been sat dormant for months. Cheers Muttley! You learn something new everyday Does that mean it doesn't have a carburetor? I need a tutorial video specifically for a 1986 2.5D transit haha.
