Having recently purchased our mk1 Transit camper, i'm confused on who (if anyone) that I can carry in the back. It's 1976, so no seatbelts were fitted and it has side facing seats only (see pic).. upload imageI'm assuming I can carry adults, but I have two young children that would be joining us on our travels. I'm sure i'm not the only one to have this problem. How has anyone else solved this issue? I don't really want to take a car with us everywhere we go as it sort of defeats the object. Thanks Stu

I had a similar problem but it was me and two children, swapped out the passenger for a double. It’s not worth the risk of travelling in the back. I considered lap belts and all sorts but side facing wasn’t safe enough for me. 😊

my logbook states "two seats" which tells me that I should not carry passengers in the back. I interpret that as "two seats ,one of which is a double" when I use my double seat, but that's as far as I go. If I wanted to carry more passengers, I guess I'd have to retro fit the rear with seats, fitted á lá minibus seats, and get them certified by a vehicle examiner. Probably my Insurance Company wouldn't be too happy in that event.

I do toy with redesigning the habitation every so often. The mk2 had a set up with 2 bench seats facing each other but there’s more space. With a side opener and a kitchen, then I get to taking the back of a mk3, then I get to the money and back to the 2 car scenario you have mentioned, and maybe a tent ⛺️ just for storage while camping 😁 then I just don’t take the kids, then my partner in crime doesn’t come, so that’ll be just me then...all problems solved 🙃

On one of the petrol can and matches days a very sweet guy rocked up where we were “parked” (read broken down) and said he loved that cis were still on the road, he remembered the top window as him and his sister would lay up there and watch during the drives, must have been fun...been fighting the kids not to do it ever since.

That's a good idea about the seat in the front. I hadn't thought about that. My logbook doesn't specify any number of seats either.

If I go on my own i'll have no problems at all 😄

the odd thing about my van is as standard it seats two but has berths for three and seats at the table for four. It matters not a jot as it is almost always just me
I often thought of replacing the table with a small one as space is at a premium, but it's not worth the effort and I just swap things around all the time.

No requirement for seat belts on side facing seats so it would be down to you.

Once we drilled an extra couple of holes for a mk4 seat everything else just bolted in. The drivers seat is lovely 😊 we found that the double seat was the only one that needed a new couple of fixings.

They look really good. So is the drivers seat a mk4 or is that a mk7 also?

They’re a mk7 now but the passenger fitting didn’t change. The drivers seat needs the box though and they can be hard to find 😊
