Hi all. I’ve refuelled my Essex V4 mk1 engine. Post starter it stalls immediately. Sparks are present (though not blue when tested against block). I am Brand New to combustion engines. Main fuel pump gives two good squirts. So throttle / accelerator jets? I don’t really want to open up the carburettor as I have no gaskets. Could it be electrics?? Anyone out there as I’ve scratching my head in the sunshine. Thanks Henry

Sounds like a blocked idle jet

Cheers. I’ll look to check it. It’s in the zephyr carb right

Does it have a ballast resistor fitted to the coil? Basically it feeds 12v whilst cranking then it drops to 9v when running. If they fail they will usually run whilst the starter is turning then stop once you release the key.

what he said^^^^^^^
It is the ceramic thing with a couple of wires attached by the battery box.

Yes- always wondered what that was. Doesn't look like it could do anything. Is there a way I could check if its the problem before sourcing one---- BTW This blog is excellent

You can check its function with a voltmeter. Ignition "on" should see 12 volts at one side, and either 12 volts (or 6, depending if the points are open or closed) at the other side. 12 volts on one side, and 0 volts at the other means it is kaput, as ze Germans would say! Or an easier way, without using a voltmeter, is to disconnect both wires on the resistor, and temporarily join together. Try starting the engine then. If the engine starts and runs okay then that is your problem. But don't think you can run it permanently like this. The points will burn out sooner or later!

As a short test you can disconnect it and run a 12v feed straight to the coil to see if it cures the problem. Don't leave it running that way too long though, you will need to disconnect the feed to stop the engine.

Still no joy peeps. Idler jet appears clean. I stripped the carb. I bypassed the ballast resistor by conjoining theirs wires. This resulted in horrible grrrrrrr noise on turning ignition so I stopped. I connected the coil with 12v direct. On ignition I still have the original problem. I have a 5second video with sound which might help you understand but not sure how to upload it. Henry

Dies it stop immediately on releasing the key or does it fade away after releasing key?

Immediately Mutley. It’s got me scratching my head. I fear I’ll need to get a garage (and I don’t know one!) over unless anyone has any other good suggestions.
