My Mk2 is making a noise .
It's very hard for me to know what it is as I'm pretty much deaf and my hearing aids pick things up very strangely.
I thought it was the tyres, so I changed them and tightened up the door catch which was loose, and these two things have improved the noise, but there's still something there (or I could be imaginaing it).
It is worst between 50 and 55 and more or less disappears at 60 which seems very strange to me. if it were wheelbearings/axle/gearbox, I'd have expected the noise to get worse the faster I went. The engine is always a lot noisier than the noise to give you an idea of what level the noise is.
Campers make all sots of rattling banging noises so it could be nothing.
ANy ideas from my poor description?

a thought occurred to me typing that, I wonder if the noise diminishes at 60 as I'm probably throttling back, it which case it could just be engine or exhaust or K&N noise.

I had something like this. Popped round to a local garage and took a mechanic out for a quick drive. He spotted it in a few minutes and cost me a tenner. Might be easier for you than trying to describe the noise š

Crawl under and check if you have oil seepege at the diff where the driveshaft bolts on.With the handbrake on and the gearstick in neutral see if there any lift in the pinion, the nut may be just loose.

describing the noise is actually the problem.
there are no signs of oil seepage and everything looks Ok. I've jacked it up and run it on axle stands even trying to hear something .Our Matt had a drive with me and could hear nothing . All in my head I think. It's done about 2 or 3 thousand since I first thought I heard something, it isn't getting worse and nothing fell off.
Popping to a local garage and getting them interested in rural Cork is a bigger problem than you can imagine. You either get a Technician who basically knows little about mechanicals or an Old School mechanic, one of whom I've been waiting weeks on.

i took it for another spin. The noise is similar to if the heater fan was running,on notch 1, similar noise, similar volume (but it's not that). It's very minor what ever it is I'd guess, it sounds the same with the window open or shut and no sign of noise under the bonnet, such as an alternator or water pump might make.
I'm guessing it's wear in the gearbox and I think it'll go on for years like that if I'm right.I don't think it can be the rear axle or I'd hear it more with the window open wouldn't I?
If I'm wrong the AA can bring me home :-) (not the RAC obviously)
