Hi I have been getting an intermittent squeaking from the motor for a while now but went out for a run today and as the revs went higher the squeak turned into more of a bearing noise, then it would stop, but as the day went on it got worse and whenever the noise was happening the water temperature would rise, if I pulled over and just left it on tick over the noise would stop and the temperature would descend to normal.
Often when I pulled away the noise had gone away again maybe for 5 minutes or even half an hour as soon as the noise came back the temperature started to rise again. the only thing that makes any sense to me is the water pump bearing going but sometimes it happens to run in a place where it isn't binding.
Any thoughts welcome also does anyone know of any online instructions for replacing the water pump? I am sure it is fairly straight forward but often it is useful to have a step by step guide.

Had it all apart today definitely water pump but also the viscous coupling bearing had fallen apart and jammed with the blade slightly offset, probably the reason the water pump bearing had gone. Does anyone know if viscous couplings are all basically the same? I have one that came off a landrover discovery that looks practically identical and I think that it will physically fit without any problem, but wondered if they might operate at a different temperature. Any water loss? Normally water pump bearing alone will not lead to overheating, take off the fan belt and see if noise goes away. Hi thanks for the reply, there was no water loss but it wasn't actually overheating but when I had the noise the temperature gauge was at the top of the acceptable range but when the noise stopped it dropped right down again. I have now taken the pump out and there is definitely slack in the bearing i have also discovered that the bearing in the viscos coupling has come apart and jammed with the blade off centre, possibly what has caused the pump bearing to wear. I have new pump on order, and have a landrover viscos coupling I can use. Dave Dave

Cool, keep us updated Hi
The camper is all back together again, the first thing I would like to say, is that I wish I had realized that it was so easy to remove the front panel/grill before I started. I removed everything with it in place but when I came to fit the new water pump I had problems lining up the little rubber tube from the pump that is behind the cambelt, so bought the bullet and removed the front panel to gain access, everything was so much easier to access then.
Anyway fitted the new pump and put everything back together. as far as the viscous coupling I didn't manage to locate the correct part, looking at various adverts on eBay the one for a MK3 transit appeared to be the same dimension, but without ordering one i wasn't sure that it would fit the fan blade that I had and wasn't game to pay out £50 plus shipping on the off chance.
Anyway I know a local guy that breaks landrovers and although the landrover coupling would not fit the transit fan blade, I picked up a Discovery tdi300 coupling and fan blade for 30€, the blade was about 3-4cm larger than the transit one, it also has 8 blades rather than 6 but fitted without any problem.
I took it out for a short run and all seems to be working fine, in fact before the problem the temperature gauge always showed halfway between cold and normal (unless I was climbing a long hill), now it appears to be sitting on normal, maybe because the coupling wasn't working properly it was being over cooled.
Lastly the alternator adjustment bracket is broken again, I will have a go at welding it up again, but it is getting pretty rough (has been repaired on many occasions, does anyone know where I might pick up a new one , or one for a different vehicle that might be modified to fit, I am guessing that any second hand ones will also be cracked or repaired.
Anyway I hope to take it out on a longer run over the weekend, I will let you know if I have any issues.

Well done matey, where is your alternator, up high or lower down?

Well done matey, where is your alternator, up high or lower down? its upper left looking at the front of the engine, the bracket has got a curved slot for the adjustment, but I dug around and found that I had a metal roof gutter mount that was about the same gauge steel with a long slot for adjusting the height of the gutter, with a but of drilling, bending and filing to make the slot wider it replaced my broken one a treat, the slot is straight not curved but is doesn't clash with anything, so hopefully it will last me a while.
