Hello everybody, I have a 1971 Mk1 Custom camper with a 2l Sierra Pinto engine in it.
Check: www.influx.co.uk/features/ford-transit-canterbury-conversion/ for some (old) pics. It still looks the same now but a little rougher round the edges after sitting outside next to the sea for 10 years.
I have a problem with my temperature gauge not working. I am an electrical/mechanical idiot and do not know the procedure for checking the current from the wire into the sender or, the voltage stabiliser at the back of the cluster. I need to find out which (if any) of these two is faulty before I start pulling wires out, which is a hellish learning curve for a technical idiot like myself.
I presume that I have the ignition turned ON when I check the currents? There are two connectors on the voltmetre and I have no idea where I'm supposed to stick them! Ooh matron (*Kenneth Williams voice). The manual says check the 'B' terminal of the voltage stabiliser, but I don't know which of the two metal slot bits is 'B'.
The sender (the one near the distributor cap on the engine body?) is a white band and has green and black wire attached. Again, I have no idea how to check the wire or sender etc.
I can get a sender ok, but voltage stabilisers are getting rare so any ideas on where to get one would be useful. I'm based in Suffolk. But I don't want to spend lots of cash on items that I'm not sure are busted. And I don't want to take it to my garage when it's theoretically easy.
I look forward to your valued suggestions.
Sticky Mickey.

Turn on the ignition, take the single wire going to the sender and earth it, the gauge should go to maximum. If it doesnt, check for power at that end of the wire, if theres power then the sender is faulty. If no power then suspect the stabiliser but this fault would affect the fuel gauge as well.

Great instructions thank you Muttley. Err...how do I earth the wire? Putting a plug in the wall and flicking the switch is the limit on my electrical knowledge.

I checked the current from the wire that connected to the sender and got a small positive. I tried checking the resistance from the tip of the sender and got nothing.
I am only getting trouble from the temperature gauge on the dash, the fuel gauge is (so far) working ok.
I have a white tipped sender, and voltage stabiliser on order so will replace them both and see where we are after that. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for your help. And Youtube's, of course!

You ahould get about 5 volts at the sensor wire, earth it by touching that wire onto the engine block. Sounds to me like a faulty sensor but be warned, these gauges are not vey accurate even if they are working

Hi,
A bit off topic, but I have a 71 Canterbury too. My interior has gone, with a DIY replacement I will be looking to change in the future. For now I'm piecing the picture together. I was wondering if yours has an interior release for the tailgate? Mine has a panel fitted inside but no release, I only noticed recently and was wondering what should be there and how it works.
Any pics would be great too, followed your link to see what mine is missing! Also looking for a skylight for the same reason, again, any inside/outside pics to help my online search?
Thanks, Tim
