hi al , im new on here and to transits, i have a 1978 cab chassis that was to good to leave under a gumtree, so i didnt, 250 crossflow and 3 speed manual, not sure where to go with the "restoration or part it out" problem. 2 days cleaning crap and it runs drives and stops. any input on a changing the dual rear end would be great, it revs like a chainsaw. thanks

I sense you may be one of our Antipodean members? Plenty of info from them for down under Transits, they have differennt engines and gearboxes to the UK models

The dual rear axle is a tough one unfortunately. 4.63 is the tallest ratio available for these, and yours should already have that fitted. One solution is to fit a T5 5 speed box. That will improve the situation a bit, dropping the revs from 3900 @100kph to 3000. The 4.1 being such a big long stroke engine would ideally like something taller than that, and the only way to achieve that is a rear axle swap. It is possible to cut the axle tubes and fit a BW78 or 9" centre to this, if you want to retain the dual wheels. Quite an expensive conversion though. Or find a Mk6 or Mk7 rear axle with a 3.58 or 3.73 ratio.(might be hard to find in Oz) If you are happy to go to single wheels, a Falcon ute diff would be the easy option.

The ute diffs are wider than the sedan ones, and many have LSD's fitted. Quite easy to fit Falcon discs and calipers to the front, so you have matching PCD's on both ends, and can fit Falcon wheels.
