Hello Folks,
my girlfriend and I just bought an '85 MK2 Camper with a Diesel Engine. The engine had been replaced before and is a never model year Direct Injection.
The previous owner already had problems with it stalling and on our way home we shot all 4 Injectors due to air. After we replaced them it ran great. However after some driving we could see bubbles entering the Filter and the vehicle lost power and stalled.
I'm now looking to put in a completely new Diesel line from Tank to Filter housing. Possibly even to the bottom of the tank, to eliminate the tank gauge assembly as the problem.
So I would: -Drain the Tank -Pull the tank off -Install the new line on the vehicle floorboards -check the fuel gauge suction pipe for damages -possibly try to replace the suction pipe in the tank by drilling a hole in the top of the gauge, somehow install a suction pipe to the bottom of the Tank and connect it to the hose. (I'm doing this because the system has passed a negative pressure test with the previous owner and the line was replaced then from filter to tank)
Has anyone ever done this before or has an idea how exactly the fuel system is set up on MK2 Campers? Even some knowledge about dropping the tank would be helpful.
Thanks Ruben

Make sure the diesel filter is sealing correctly, check all flexible lines for perishing and damage. Check/ replace copper washers on all banjo unions. Check leak off pipes, do this before undertaking any other work

I put a piece of clear hose before and after the Filter. Bubbles are clearly coming from the tank line, entering the filter. I haven't had the chance to inspect the underside of the vehicle, neither do I know where exactly the lines run from and to the tank.

Is the vehicle fitted with a lift pump on the block?

Is the vehicle fitted with a lift pump on the block? I installed a priming pump and hooked it to the battery directly to get all the air out. So fuel is pumped (and bubbles) no matter the engine running or not.

Where are you connecting that pump? Is it still drawing from the original pipe work.

Where are you connecting that pump? Is it still drawing from the original pipe work. Thanks for your support! We solved the problem like this: Emptied and Dropped the fuel Tank, disconnected all hoses and wires, removed the tank gauge assembly, drilled an additional hole in the top of it and put a new piece of hose all the way to the bottom of the tank, clogged the old line, made sure our new suction pipe was diesel proof all around, reinstalled the tank gauge and Tank... No problems ever since and more than 500km driven. Also no leakages and no more additional priming pump running (but installed just in case)
