Hi We have a 1981 Ford Transit Camper, a few years ago we were having a good run in her and she was going very well (she was sat quite comfortably on 100km/h) until suddenly there was a knocking from the engine and she started producing smoke from the exhaust, thinking that it was something terminal I pulled over and got the recovery people to pick her up and get her back to the house, eventually had time to look at what was going on, I check various things including compression (which was roughly the same on all cylinders) but basically couldn't find anything wrong and she started and appeared to run fine.
Since then I have done a few thousand kilometres without problem, today the same thing happened, again I was sat comfortably at about 100km/h for about 10 minutes and started to get bad knocking from the engine and lots of smoke I had nowhere to pull off but backed off as much as I could and the knocking stopped along with the smoke and she got me the 30km home without further incident including some long climbs.
I am guessing that under certain conditions the crank case is pressurising and pushing oil past the rings causing the knocking and burning oil, but any suggestions of a likely cause.
Dave

An injector can stick so instead of spraying the diesel it will just dribble in so will not ignite. When It does it sounds much like a big end has gone with a loud knocking. I have had it happen to me & the symptoms you gave were exactly the same.

That is encouraging, I am not sure how available injectors are for that motor, but I believe there is somebody fairly local to me that reconditions them, I will find out.
Thanks again

As Ralph is suggesting, a dribbling injector will give these symptoms. If it is an injector then the smoke will be grey/ white.

Try putting an injector cleaner addictive in the tank.

Does anyone know which Injectors the 2.4 York motor has, I have emailed the local guy and he cannot quote me a price without knowing which injectors it has, or does this motor have more than one type depending what they were using when it was manufactured?
Otherwise I will have to go and see him.
