Hello All, my first post on here, I have been intending to upgrade to a mk1 transit for a few years, current vehicle being a Ford Ranger thirsty gutless wonder.
I am a carpenter and am looking for a project vehicle ideally from the earlier years - i would really like a pdeals through the floor model. Twin wheels a must, and preferably a bull nose model as i would like to fit a later DI and mothball the original engine, and then fit or restore a nice wooden pickup back and i'll have a respectable works vehicle for daily use.
I'm up for a good project so anything considered please! I don't know if the early chassis cabs were offered in different wheel bases, but LWB would be best for me.
Any help to point me in the right direction would be much appreciated, I am of course watching ebay and have been for some time.
- Sion

Welcome mate! Try Ralph to see if he can find you one, or look for a poorly coach built camper

That's basically what I've done, I'm a builder and after a gut full of landrovers I bought this tipper my tipper It's an ally tipper with a crane, winch and ramps Only weighs 1840kg so it has a usefull payload unlike modern transits I mothballed my pinto and fitted Di and 5 speed box. Though in currently looking into fitting a more modern diesel or even a petrol to comply with LEZ not that I take it that far in. Anyway happy to offer my advise in Di and also may be selling the Di once I get time to 'upgrade'

What was wrong with the pinto? Was it just the fuel consumption? I was tempted with a 3.8l V6 and autobox but decided it was too much work for too little gain so am still accumulating bits to turbo my pinto.

How will you go on for tool storage with a pickup? As has been said before if you can do the repairs etc then you would probably be better off buying a cheap camper and weighing the body in, the rear panel from the cab (that is usually removed on the campers) was common up until mk3? (someone else will be able to confirm that) so isn't as tricky to get a hold of as you might think.

I'm a builder and have no issue with tool storage. Plenty of room in cab for bits. There's always the option of building a storage box on the buck or cubby boxes to hang below. This is a camper which is basically what you have in mind, may help with some inspiration
