Hi all. I was driving my mk2 at 65mph when the bonnet flew up, obscuring my vision. I managed to pull over to the hard shoulder and after checking under the hood found that the spring catch for the hood was broken. I slammed the hood down and carried on. When I got back home I tried to open the bonnet with trigger under the wheel but the trigger broke (I pumped it a few times before hearing a twang).
So my question for - is there a way to open the bonnet without using this trigger mechanism. This is particularly important as I also have a flat battery and therefore need to jump start the engine - when it rains it pours.

I doubt there's anything simple otherwise there'd be no point in having the bonnet release inside the van for security. I've had to do this in the past on a classic car, for which I took the plastic front grill off to access the mechanism. It was the end of the grill though and I can't say I've checked if it's possible on a Transit.
As an aside, someone told me the other week that the modern Focus has a key release behind the Ford badge on the grill instead of inside the car. If that goes the easiest way is to cut the bonnet off and replace it!

Its easier with a phase2 (plastic grille). Little hands make it easier, but still be prepared for skinned knuckles! If your cable is well secured it might be an idea to lay on the floor and reach up to pull the cable off its clips. It comes round from the drivers side inner wing, accross the top of the slam panel and loops past the catch back to it, attaching to the passenger side of the catch. If you get hold of the cable pull it in front of the rad. You can then pull the cable through the grille and pull it to your right to open the bonnet. You may need several attempts and may need to slap the bonnet over the catch with the flat of your hand. Good luck, and be careful with the cable as they are no longer available

Lay on your back looking up into the engine bay, you can see the bonnet cable in front of the radiator on the left side. Yu can simply push the lever to the left and open the bonnet

Hi - thanks. I have the cable - I can loop it out so it comes out of the grill. When you say pull it to the right do you mean pull it in the direction it comes from - towards drivers side? I did try this already but it did not open. I could feel the cable springing but was unsuccessful and did not want to pull it too hard.

bear in mind it will be stiff...that's why you broke it in the first place! Can you tire a bit o string to it in for the next time?
Phorbuiz...yeah my Focus is like that but it's not likely to break, not like it's exposed to the weather or something :-)
