Hi guys, just joined the forum, I am starting a food truck business ideally at end November, and have my heart set on using a Mk1. It will only be driven maximum 60 miles per week to and from the pitch. I estimate the weight of kitchen equipment to be 1.2 tons. Dimension wise for the kitchen I'd like to have 3m Length and 2m width and enough room to stand up in. With regards to bodywork I am considering having a custom timber panelled box built, so the rear wouldn't be a massive concern, unless it looks good enough and I can get on the road quicker. I don't have a massive amount of money to spend as the kitchen equipment and licensing is killing my funds. I also have a decent mechanic and excellent joiner friend that will help out with any work they can do to bring the cost down. I don't know how realistic my idea for a mk1 is but I'm willing to listen to any and all advice. Sorry for the length of post Thanks in advance, Davy

A good Mk1 and a tight budget don't make a good couple best of luck though

Welcome mate. As its getting towards the end of the summer have a look for a coachbuilt camper with a damaged or leaky body. Throw the camper bit away (sell off the appliances) and you will have a chassis cab to start on. Bear in mind there will be no cab back though. You can replace it with a van (up to Mk5) loadspace bulkhead or keep it to connect the cab to the body. Keep us posted!

Cheers guys, camper prob seems the best idea, as I will most likely be manufacturing a whole rear wagon style cab so it's of little consequence. When I say tight budget I'd ideally like to spend 2/3 but could go more if necessary, the mk1 is the only style van I'd like to work with, there is a crazy amount of French vans operating as food trucks especially the HY which I find ridiculously ugly. But yeah I realise it'll be difficult, but if a jobs worth doing....

Keep an eye on viktor with his imports, you may want to go a little later on the model if reliability is an issue for your income If its not broken...I can break it!

Maybe an ambulance conversion...the ones put to camping are still quite low and could be turned, mk1 is rare though

Whats your timescale on this? You need a twin wheel given the weight you want to carry. Also, keep in mind all Mk1s will be tax exempt in 2018, and its possible to fit a later engine if you want to. Jonochap has a 2L pinto in his with the flat front

I'd like to have the van by end of October start of November to be on the road for december time. Plus I'm in Belfast so I'll have to get it over somehow. Looked at that one on gumtree, I'm not on that tight a budget lol I know that I'll have to re spray the one I buy regardless and an engine swap if necessary, I'm speaking to the guys about starting pre-fab on the rear cab to save time once we get the vehicle, just need to get dimensions for a lwb twin wheel and we could make some sort of movement in the meantime

You should be able to find a down at heal mk1 camper ok for that much assuming that's how much for the base vehicle not the entire project? One of my neighbours imports the 70's Peugeot vans from France most of them seem to be bought as food vans, have asked him to look out for sensibly priced rust free transits too but none have arrived so far

I have a Jennings road ranger I am thinking of parting with, its generally very solid but needs repairs to bottom of doors and rear of front wings where they meet the doors. underneath has never been welded and doesn't need any. its a bullnose so diesel engine would go in a treat (I also have an engine and box ready to fit)
