Have removed the front axle & now need to remove the stub axle. How do I remove the pin which holds the king pin in place ? I've cleaned up the stub axle, can see where the pin is but it won't budge. On the opposite side it looks like the end of a rivet so it only comes out one way ? Thanks in advance

There is a little pin. That's supposed to hold the king pin in. It rusts up. Your best bet is to take the axle to an engineering co with a press, and ask the to get the old kingpins off the axle.

That's annoying! I thought that I could drift the little holding pins out. They have both been marinating in plus gas too.

You stand more chance of removing the cotter pin with the axle on the vehicle, i have made a short stubby drift which with a bit of heat has never failed to work yet.

Is there play in the assembly or are you just cleaning up? If its not broken don't fix it!

There is up & own play. I've given up & have taken it to my local engineering shack. Next problem is trying to remove the track rod ends from the long bar, got them off the drag link but stuck on & heat & plus gas won't shift them.

For what it's worth it's usually only the thrust bearings that are shot. The lovely old chap that did mine as a favour job had me holding a drift in molegrips as he swung at it with a full size sledge hammer. The axle was on the van. I was crapping myself in case he missed but he was spot on and after some very hefty blows the locking pins yielded.. However the kingpins themselves needed pressing out, the old chap had a press that he assembled around the hub, that was a battle involving some heat too. Including many cuppas and to much jawing it took a day.
