Hello all. I have some questions with regards to an Mk2 (1980) lwb Transit that I am thinking about buying. am a mechanic by trade and fabricator. My question really is, how common is it to convert from a single to dual rear axle? Are these bolt in? What are the common gear ratio's in the diffs and the differences between the two, and what about the front hubs? I would want to convert this to a camper and want also prefer the looks of a dually, or could I just slap on the dual rear arches and put in a 8 or 10j wheel? Although I'd be eating bearings every few thousand miles that way. It has had a scorpio v6 fitted with auto box out of a frog eye which comes with it, so no PATS hassle. He's had a driveshaft made to fit etc. It's a good deal just getting the Mrs. on board. It's a 1980 lwb former German or Swiss ambulance. Basically exactly this van but not the same one obviously: www.hainkel.de/gallery/picKLE-cache/Transit/Felgen/IMAG0069%20(Medium)_800.jpgTIA!

Very nice. I have never been up close to a single wheel LWB, do you have the deep inner arches? If so that's half the battle. You will need a complete axle (with wheels) and external wheel arches. Ask Ralph on here or Maltatransit. You will need to remove the arch infill panel, these are rare so worth selling. I can see why you want to go twin wheel, personally I think a LWB single wheeler is a waste of a LWB shell and is two wheels short!

I have external arches and would be interested in buying the single wheel arches from you. Where are you located? What are the single arches worth to you? What do you want for your external arches? Can you post a some pics? cheers

I just paid the guy a deposit today, just getting the logistics done so here's some pics of the actual beast with a 2.9 v6 and auto box fitted. just needs the radiator doing, some wiring (full donor included so no PATS issues), exhaust and the driveshaft is included made to fit and balanced. Here she is: Side shot, the single wheel arches are in very good nick: A pic of the interior to potentially answer the question as to whether the inner arches are deep enough? And of course a v6 shot. Can't wait to dig my teeth in!

You will need the inner arches, springs are ok. Need twin wheel hubs and spindles for the front axle (or a whole axle (easier) )

So not so far from you, maybe an hour. I'm there regularly. What axle do you have, interested in swapping those too then? Any idea what ratio you have? What year is yours and what about the front end/wheels etc? Seems like we may just have a whole bunch of things to swap out with each other then no?

Anyone have a picture of the arches inside the van? I could also go the route of wider arches and a nice deep dish rear wheel. Wheel bearing may not be too happy but if I get the back spacing right and widen outwards as far as possible, that should look pretty good. I'm mainly wanting the dual rear for the look, although the functionality of load carying etc. would be good. It's destiny is as the family camper. Anyone have any experience with these frog eye auto boxes btw? Things to look out for? cheers

Unfortunately. The Transit is a no go. It's no good.
But I found a 77 Mercedes 406d to take it's place. Family holidays here we come, just not with a quick little v6 but a big roomy diesel. win some lose some.
Have fun around here!
