Ok, I thought my mk1 had discs on the front but there not; had a look today and they are drums and that's not ideal with the engine upgrade were planning. So any ideas, is there an upgrade that's commonplace or do I need to make something up. Ideally I want to keep my mk1 wheels which are 5 stud.

Yep doing the axle is the easiest. You will need new flexi hoses too.

Fixing discs on the front is ok. You don't have to use a servo but make sure resovoir takes the fluid. It may be worth fitting a brake bias valve as yours is set up for drums. If you fit discs the effort on the front is improved. On Anglias when they fitted discs to them they used smaller rear wheelcylinders to counteract the increased stoppers on the front. Something like that.

I would fit a servo to get the full benefit from the discs, you may find you have to push pretty hard without one do you have a twin circuit master cylinder?

can you not just fit mk2 master cylinder and servo and a mk2 front axle ?

Things to consider is that drum brakes have a spring to hold back the shoes and as such a drum master cylinder has residual pressure to hold shoes at a bit of pressure against springs. If using for a disc this will be pushing the pads against the disc/rotors causing binding. Also generally the hydraulic capacity of slave cylinders in discs are larger than those for drums so if your drum master cylinder has a smaller capacity it is likely to run dry quicker. There were a lot of changes to the evolution of master cylinders in the early seventies and am not sure how this affects our Transits. Best to change the whole system. Disclaimer......

also is there any vented discs that fit the mk2 ? Yes some models have 4 pot calipers and vented discs, not sure which ones they were standard on

Sorry guys for this, I just got back and had someone else check the van and it's got discs as I had been told by victor originally. When I rang the garage to ask them to check beforehand I got some work placement college kid who by the sounds of it didn't even look properly. He told me they were drums on the front. One problem with me being 80miles away is having to rely on others. Anyways I appreciate the help anyway and I'll have to call Ralph now and apologise for wasting his time aswell,
