Do you not have a VIN plate or stamped in VIN? How you get it MOT’d? What about the V5c when you bought the van.

It is stamped into the nearside spring hanger, you will need to find it as the DVLA are inspecting most applications for V5's now. I had my last 2 applications inspected.

You are in a proper sticky situation there I'm afraid. A vehicle where it sounds like the VIN has been removed, no ID plates, no documentation, and just a registration that could be from anywhere. The DVLA are, as you've found, wary of processing these types of application due to potential theft/fraud/ringing.
Some years ago you could get the VIN when doing a comprehensive vehicle check but I think the rules changed so that you only get the VIN confirmation after you've matched what you're entering against DVLA records. Might be worth a try though. If it's been off the road some time expect them to ask for it to be checked.
I once picked up a mk3 Cortina from a deceased's estate. Full car, mostly in bits, most of the way through a restoration, but no documentation or number plate. Applying for a V5 using the stamp on the inner wing was a nightmare because it was mostly unreadable. After 3 failed attempts and 3 cheques I gave up and sold it on, and there was a big thread on the MTOC about it. I believe I saw it not long ago but it was allegedly a top of the range GXL model.
