Back in the the early eighties when working in a main dealers I fitted a new engine to diesel parcel van (cop stopper )under warranty.Got it running to discover at 40mph it wold surge up and down so the foreman told me to bring it down to the diesel shop in the city. When I arrived at the shop the fitter jumped into the passenger seat and got me to take it for a spin.Well I drovedown by the docks and turned the corner to see a copper in the middle of the road with his hand up. I glanced across the screen and to my horror the only thing on it were the wipers. It was a very warm day and I had the sliding door open and as I was just about stopped the copper put his head in the door and I braked a bit harder to stop the van.Well the door shot forwards at about 100 mph and something flew over my head whilst I ducked and the passenger ran between the two single seats.Thoughts of firing squad life ect ect start to rush through me head when I looked up to see the copper still standing but with his back to me and me shouting are you ok.The passenger comes out of the back of the van with the coppers hat and the platstic peak in a spiral about three long still attached to the hat at one end.He ask me where I was going to and I told him I was brining my passenger back to his place of work and then going back to mine.He asks me for a lift back to the station as his words were there is not mutch happening down here and mine were well there was a couple of minutes ago.He jumps into the van ann sits on the passenger knee till we get him back to the station and all he was worried about was what he was going to tell the sargent what happened to his hat so he could get a new one.
