Hi, I am looking for a MK1 van, my ideal project would be a tax exempt, swb, sld, and rear tailgate type, and flat front! would consider camper or minibus, or even a pickup! non runner would be ok and it needing some work would be no problem as I have a big project in mind! I have a jaguar xjr 4.0 v8 supercharger for all the running gear! mid engine 370bhp.........my own take on a supervan. Thanks Robert

welcome mate! Thats quite a plan and some spec!! Have a look for a shite camper. A pop top can be reverted with a Mk2 roof, an a CI reverted using a van interior bulkhead (up to about 2001). I am looking forward to the build thread....

sadly no, you would have to find a Mk2 scrapper. Thats what our Mk1 SWB has, Mk2 roof.

There are plenty coming in from Malta, they haven't been wrapped in cotton wool from the last 30 years though, and its close to the sea as well as rain so they aren't mint in most cases. Good luck with your search

How long is a piece of string, some were registered and used in England before hand so they are relatively easy to get the plate back for as they are already on the system, others you need to go into with your eyes wide open, all the identification needs to be present and correct and you will need proof of age and an MOT to get it registered (before you start chopping it). If you do start chopping it about - ie mid engined etc you are getting into radically altered vehicle territory and in theory you will need an IVA inspection and re-registration on a Q if it gets flagged up on the system at MOT time etc

class7 commercials are not affected by the IVA. I already looked into this when it was first mentioned. One of ours would have been affected had it not been 3.5ton gross.

as a general rule, twin wheelers are class7 but some 160 and 120 vans are twin wheel and class4 (confused?) . It depends on the gross. The gross is on the V5 under revenue weight, the unlaiden is on the VIN plate.

I thought historic vehicle had a free reign on modifications? I had a mk1 cortina a few years ago, well now I think about it must be near 10 years.... I fitted mk2 escort front suspension, capri rear suspension, axle, scimitar overdrive g/box, 3.1 v6 essex engine, triple weber carbs, roll cage ,bucket seats, etc, etc, no problems with mot! no q plate and still tax exempt! also fitted a v8 engine into a lotus esprit no problems with mot or change on the v5 with new engine size? doing another v8 into another lotus at the moment! has it all changed now at the mot stations? this is really burst my bubble I don't want to lose the tax exempt status on the v5!

I think it boils down to how radical etc etc . I too have done loads of mods and never had issues at MOT it is such a grey area but I have never met anyone who has had to go and q plate or lost tax except . My mk2 cortina will be running a 2ltr zetec and fuel injection and they certainly did not fit them in 1968
