Ive just ordered a new PCV valve and sealing grommit from Burton Power as ive just been reading up online and some consider the pcv valve to be changed at every major service. better to be sure then forever wondering i say. lol

Are you points or electronic Dave? If you have points, have you ever used a dwell meter?
What did your plugs come out like?
Have you got a water trap in your fuel line? I had a steamer, turned out it was water in my fuel.
Have you got heated manifolds?
What do you reckon to trying some Bars Leaks in your coolant?

I recently fitted Accuspark electronic ign and ive only got a inline fuel filter and as for heated manifold?? never heard of it, but im sure they wernt around in Cortinas where this engine came from. I only did a couple of miles in the van but the plug electrode was biscuit coloured.
Oh and this isnt a phase 2 van its a phase 1 with replacement phase 2 cab and replacement Cortina engine.

And what would be the benefit of Bars Leak in the cooling system? Its a brand new recored unit with a fatter modern core.

And what would be the benefit of Bars Leak in the cooling system? Its a brand new recored unit with a fatter modern core. Bars Leaks claim it does all sorts of good things to your motor Dave. In this instance, if you have a minor leak of coolant into your engine, it could seal that leak. From what I've understood, a leak from your head to your inlet manifold is a possibility. Bars might sort that. Your other, more expensive solution, is to have your head pressure tested.

I only did a couple of miles in the van but the plug electrode was biscuit coloured. Oh and this isnt a phase 2 van its a phase 1 with replacement phase 2 cab and replacement Cortina engine. Heated manifolds are as old as the chestnuts on the common Dave. I'm pretty certain that Cortina engines had heated manifolds originally. The inlet and exhaust manifolds met just under the carb. The hot exhaust gases heated the inlet manifold.
Some Webber conversions had water heated manifolds, there are / were electriclly heated manifolds.
Lack of a heated manifold may contribute to your problem as the combustion gases won't burn very well at tickover.
Incidentally,I suspect Semi-Hemi's Buick has a thermostatic control on it's heated manifold.
That right Semi?

Now i come to think of it, the heater pipes do go into the inlet manifold. I went back to MOT station today had had emmisions checked again, here are the results:- They dont mean a thing to me, but im sure someone knows.

They mean that the MOT test doesn't test for water vapour in your exhaust to me Dave. I suspect they are a red herring.
If you are getting steam out your exhaust pipe, water must be getting into your engine somewhere. Inlet manifold and before the valve in the head seems probably in my mind. Gasket seems unlikely since you aren't getting combustion gas into your water system.
It's not unknown for water heated manifolds to be porous Dave.
Bars might well sort any of the options listed above.
The other thing is water in your tank. Have you checked your fuel filter for water yet?
Bars Leaks or Bar seal are the only gloops I'd use in my coolant. Cheaper than chips on eBay.

Yeah i guess,the exhaust and inlet bolt together so the exhaust gasses heat the inlet manifold..had got some sort of flap in there too but is wedged open!!

35 bucks for a Packard, I expect it's about the same. 5.0904 Exhaust manifold heat control thermostat spring $35.00

I think it's worth a go before you spend serios money Dave. And I hope it does the job for you.
I think there's very little difference. I started with Bars Leaks, so I tend to use it.
If you read what it says on the bottle / packet, they seem to do more or less the same job.

does it smoke all the time or just a mitute or2 on start up,mine smokes on start up after a few minutes it clears,but still a bit fumie,and if water gets in the eghaust it smokes more
