i used a mk5 crossmember with good results when i tidied up my mk2 a few years back. i basically mowed the mk5 crossmember complete from a scrap mk5, separated the mk5 outer section which is different and just got a flat strip of 2mm sheet fitted to the out side which is basically what the mk2 has. the bottom of the mk2 panel can be attached to this using 10mm head self tappers rather than the m6 bolts that originally held it on. it worked out spot on and suprisingly this part seems to be ok in most mk5,s ive come across. be ready to lose some sweat though as theres a shit load of spot welds holding the two halves of the mk5 crossmember together, lol!!!! OK, reserve plan, although I think my welder can fabricate something or repair the original if I push him. (he likes new bits that just fit on....)

My crossmember from above....both ends. Has repairs made I think due to a shunt. I think this is savable, it isn't rotten as far as I can see. Opinions please

Looking at that I would say those plates were put over an already rotten x member , if it's not rotten all the way across and only at the joins you, could cut out a face at a time and weld new in and then see it all when all faces have been replaced . But it douse Ok thin on that chassis rail top as well

my man is willing to patch it up but prefers new sections (easier I guess) I reckon he'll do it easily enough...only needs repairs at the ends where it was badly patched up before I believe. He has to replace/repair the front foot or so of the chassis members too

trouble with a lot of people of here is they say a time/date and they never seem to stick to it by miles so fingers crossed Richard.

Was pretty quiet when I was over the other day so I'm hopeful. 4 days he reckons for the chassis and then there's the sills too. Going into 4 figures is my expectation. Might as well do the whole job properly. He has a good reputation for not bodging
