The vin IS definitive proof of original date of manufactures. It is given to the vehicle at the start of the manufacturing process. Ford will use this to supply.parts and repairs, if a DVLA inspector wants to ascertain date of manufacture then he will check the stamped in VIN. There is no other way, you can check date stamps on individual parts but these will only be a guide.

So mine is from Januari 1979, but another question is; the vin starts with GB. G for Germany and B for Genk Belgium?? It was therefore made in Germany and then assembled in Belgium?
I can't find a explanation how to read my Vin.

Could someone please repost the vin decoder table? It's disappeared and I really need to see it. I'm about to take on the dvla in what will most likely become my own living hell. . . All for a years saving on road tax!

Thanks for digging it out and reposting it . . It may be accompanying my application to have the correct manufacture year respected on my v5 . . . trigger dvla misery

No problem mate. Seriously though, it may take about half the time to get the paperwork through as it would to naturally achieve tax free status.
