Why would anyone put a 1.6 in something that size? Skin & rice pudding spring to mind ! He was a very patient man Andy,

There's folks about that think smaller engine - more MPG I'm afraid Fred. I bet he got a shock.

He often has a trailer on tha back. He's not all that slow though, there's usually about a mile of traffic trying to keep up with him. ;D

Only 300cc and 7 BHP between the 1.6 and 2.0 Pintos, not much really though the torques are well down on the teeny pinto

None of which is particularly important though.
The real decider is that the Transit 2.0 has more grunt than the Transit 1.6 ever has between say 2400 and 3200 revs.
Couple a 1.6 with the wide ratio gearbox, you end up hanging on to low gears because the jump to the next gear up would find the engine without enough grunt to carry the speed. And drinking petrol.
If they’ve coupled a close ratio gearbox to a 1.6 in that motorhome, you'd burn your clutch out on your first hill start because bottom gear would be too high.
The only realistic answer for motor of this size is a 100 plus BHP diesel with 5 or 6-speed gearbox, or a V6 petrol with a 4 speed box.
You just can't beat cubes.

Yes but power costs. All the same I think Stoney's right, the 1.6 won't pull the skin off a rice pudding, and won't move this thing over 20!!

Power only costs when you use it Fred. But even that is too simplistic. Coz, if you've got it, you'll probably use it.
But even that's too simplistic. A 1.6 Cortina used more petrol than a 2 litre at the same speeds. Simply because the 2 litre engine didn't have to thrash up and down gears so much.
I think there's a very good chance that this motorhome with a V6 would use less fuel than a 2 litre one at the same speeds. My V6 pickup certainly used less fuel than the V4 pickup I had before it, at similar speeds. Especially if I had a trailer on the back.
When I was in a hurry, the V6 used more than the V4, but I got there a lot quicker. Especially if I had a trailer on the back.
One of the reasons a diesel of that period is more economic than a petrol is that they accelerate much more slowly. And travel along the flat much more slowly.
The very cheapest way to run this motorhome is probably a V6 with a good propane conversion by the way.
