Hello everyone! I'm new to this forum and owning a transit
So I recently bought a Ford transit mk2 2l petrol 1982
The van has previously been converted to drive on petrol or lpg
. However, I have never driven it on lpg, only petrol.
Bought the van, drove +-100 miles when a valve broke.
Removed the head at the side of the road, replaced valve and reassembled.
Drove the remaining +-150 miles to get home without issues.
After returning, I fitted an accuspark electronic ignition conversion kit (Ford Pinto Points Distributor conversion kit) and a new ballast resistor
The van hasn’t worked properly since. The van starts, idles but won’t rev. It sometimes backfires through the carb and bogs in neutral when throttle is pressed.
What I have tried since: put in new points instead of electronic ignition kit, ran a 12v coil directly off the battery to the distributor, fitted a 32/36 carb instead of the standard/original water choke carb (which I read online is prone with issues), fitted a new distributor cap + rotor, removed distributor (disassembled and cleaned), set timing using strobe light (vacuum disconnected) and replaced the HT lead from coil to distributor. I’ve also checked the marks on the crank/cam timing belt which line up correctly. Fuel pressure seems good, when fuel line is disconnected and engine cranks, fuel spurts out and pressure is kept in the hose. I’ve rerouted the fuel line to bypass the petrol/lpg relay switch.
After doing each of these things, the van keeps showing the same symptoms. It starts with choke on and/or off. The engine does not idle super smooth, it seems to switch between smooth, jerky and stalling. When the throttle is pressed a bit, air can be heard rushing in but rpm hardly increases and the engine almost dies. If throttle is opened fully, the engine stalls and sometimes there’s a backfire through the carb.
Spark plugs are black and there’s a big black spot on the ground (where the exhaust points). When I removed the head to replace the valve, the spark plugs were brown.
I’ve fitted the accuspark kit to two of my other cars and has never caused any issues.
Yesterday I refitted the original carb, car wouldn't start at all this time. I noticed the new distributor cap has longer fitting that the spark plug leads attach to so it possibly wasn't making proper contact. The battery has also been drained (by leaving something on) by the previous owner which means that the battery looses its charge quite quickly. Checked the sparkplugs after failing to start the car and the plugs were wet and there seemed to be spark.
I hope you guys can help me out as I’m running out of options.
Thanks!
