depends what engine you have and what you want to do. Have TBH ratios are a bit of a mystery to me, but I do know some ratios are best for towing and others for motorway speeds, and also it depends on the fuel type. That having said we have never changed an axle (easier than doing the diff) when converting from petrol to diesel. Why do you ask?

It's easier to do a diff than the whole axle on a single wheeler Fred. Muttley's the man to answer the ratio questions me thinks

You can tell the ratio from the axle code on the vin plate, they vary from 5.11 (short/more revs) to 3.9 (tall/less revs) with the 4.63 in the middle (ideal)

It was originally a petrol (2 litre pinto) now fitted turbo DI. My current ratio is 4.44 and was woundering was other options had I ! So with the above info 3.9 would be the tallest gearing I coud get ?

Yeah 3.9 is the tallest alright. 4.11 is available too assuming its the square axle.

I read on another forum that later transit diffs can be fitted to the mk1, and mk2 axles, is this true? What limitations would there be (axle types)? Can a later axle be fitted to an early van without modification?

some diffs need a carrier to keep them together when removed from the axle which is why we have changed the full axle in the past. That too could also be a twin wheel thing......

Ok thank you, mine a the square type, will start looking out for the 4.1 diff. I also need to tow a car and trailer so I need to be careful not to over gear it !!

im told you can use the mk5 4.1 complete diff assembly (pigs head) in a square axle. but you will have to swap over the mk2 spool or side gears as the half shaft splines are different. i havent tried it yet myself.

Thanks oldskooler you just reminded me. I have done that a couple of years ago when i laid my hands on a 94 axle. You do have to swap the side gears but thats handy enough as they stay in the carrier that bolts to the crown wheel assembly. Took a little while to realign the crown wheel when putting it back together. You're supposed to use dial gauges to set up preload and backlash. But i set it up so that i could feel a tiny bit of movement between the gears. Seemed to work out ok.

personally I would just swap the whole axle........

As would I, 8 bolts, a couple of brake cables and hoses, and a bit of brake bleeding is a lot easier than cracking open a diff, but when you haven't got an axle it's good to know what you can do.
