Today I started to sort out the spaghetti junction of the electrical system in the camper area. I managed to get the 12 volt lights working after tracing a wire to a hidden flick switch. The 240 volt system has a 16amp connection on the outside, into some household 2.5mm 2core earth, into a fuse box, that has 2 trips 1 runs into a panel, the other into a standard household socket, that has a 3 pin plug fitted in it. At some stage in the system there is what looks like a cigarette connecter that I hope is 12 volt but it also seems to have 240 volt wiring going to it. I think this is to power the fridge.
I plan to trace the wiring, label it, and change it so the outside 16amp input runs to a 16amp plug inside under a seat box (where the leisure battery and fuse box currently are (pun intended)) then have a 16amp male plug fitted to some proper flex to the fuse box. This will let me swap the 240 from a land line to a 1000 watt inverter I have. That coupled with 2 100watt solar panels on the roof and 2 110 amp hour batteries should give me a bit of flexibility on my travels.

240v into a cigarette lighter sounds hairy, if your going to get involved best start again from scratch, not worth taking the risk of an in vitro fire whilst cooking breakfast!. Good luck! An extra pair of hands on one end of a multi meter is useful... I found several worn and rusty ‘chocolate box’ connectors in my wiring but happily no burnt toast!

Thankfully did just that. A rewire making up new looms, and fitting LED lighting on both 12v and 240v circuits.

Does your 240v have an RCD?

Does your 240v have an RCD? Yes. And 12v all fused now.
