id like to know how to wire up a volt meter on a mk2 so it only works when the ignition is on ,ive got a idea but but like to make sure ,cheers For ignition only, live feed from rear of ignition switch to gauge and then to earth. For accessory feed use the yellow lead on the ignition switch to gauge and then to earth

A voltmeter will show battery voltage, not charging. It will rise when the vehicle is running depending on what else is consuming current. Normal battery voltage with everything off should be around 12.5 volts. This should rise to around 13.5 with the engine running and alternator and fan belt in good order. As you turn on other consumers like heater motor, wipers ETC it will fall accordingly. To see the amount your alternator is putting in the battery current wise you will need an Ammeter.
