Here's a technical question; I have a 68 Transit which has twin leaf front springs, i.e. it has two leaves per spring. I have another 68, a 69 and a 77, all of which have single leaf front springs. My questions are, are the twin leaf springs original or a modification and what effect would twin leaves have on the ride compared to single leaves?

are they both the same engine? Sometimes diesels have bigger springs, but it's most likely and after market extra spring. Bear in mind the little V4 we fit over here is at least a third of the weight of the Oz engines....

I think if I remember correctly the early mk1s had a multi leaf front spring and they changed to a single leaf on the later models. My 67 van has 2 leaves and a small helper leaf underneath while my 77 chassis cab has the single leaf set up. Perhaps someone with a later parts book could give you the date they changed. I'm not sure if it was the same with the Aussie vans though. The diesel versions definately had stronger springs than the petrol ones.

Both vans were originally V4s, one of the 68s and the 69 now have Holden sixes, the 68 with the twin springs has a Falcon six in it. Given that the van will have another Falcon six in it soon, am I best off keeping twins?

Hard to say mate, don't automatically assume that more is better. Material developments have meant a lot of vehicles including heavy trucks, now have fewer but quite often thicker leaves. If it was me, I'd try it with whatever happens to be fitted, then change to the other set up and decide which feels best from there. There will be a lot of factors that can influence your decision .... What you're using the van for, the roads you're driving on, your own style of driving. Ultimateley it's what feels right to you. Good luck, Keep us posted ;D

Point to note, springs are rated when manufactured and the number of leaves is not always relate to more weight carrying capacity. Early Transits had multileaf springs as spring technology had not advanced. Now single leaf springs can out carry multileafs. It alls depends if the vans have there original springs fitted
