Has anyone got any clear pictures of the coil area? lost my spark, AA say its this relay strapped to the ballast resistor and its wired to the coil and ballast resistor, instead of replacing this relay as all the wires look old and shot, i want to remove it and just wire it up original as i can't even see what this mod is for? Its just I have all these wires now

Mate I have no idea what that could be. Are you on points?

ask muttley! I have mostly leccy ignition on the mk2s. BUT the mk1s have points and they have a balast resistor/solenoid type thing under the battery. Could that be it?

Yes thats it, but this has a relay and holder wired in for some reason, maybe its some sort of hoe made immobilizer?? so I need to see where all these wires go into the balast resistor and coil and rid this relay

Could the relay be the starter relay, the wiring diagram shows the ballast wire connected to it, I assume this is were the coil gets its 12volt feed from during cranking. The manual doesn’t say were the relay is located but it shows an inhibitor switch(Auto Box?) relay next to the coil, I don’t know for sure but I suppose its possible that this relay does both. Good Luck. Attachments:

Location of Inhibitor Relay. Hope this helps. Peter Attachments:

Thanks everyone, yes it was the inhibitor relay, but an after market one from RS and it was a mess of wires and all cut about. She is now in the process of been changed over to a 12V coil and do away with the relay and ballast resistor. fingers crossed she is on the road soon. A 12V coil took some getting, shocking! you could walk into a scrappy years ago and take your pick!

sorry i,am a bit late, but ur van originally had electronic ignition, which failed and was replaced by points , as i,am shure u now no , the relay brings in the ballast resistor once the engine has started to drop the voltage to 9volts (running voltage) rather than 12volts (starting voltage) for bigger sparks on start up. i think from vague memory if u fit a 12volt coil and remove ballast resistor and 9volt coil u may have problems with the points burning ,because of increased load ?

Yes! Had to re build a phase2 from a scrapper on points. They were shot within a day.. Leccy goes wrong very seldom. Done one module in 25 years!!
