how can i stop the gearlever from coming away from the gearbox as it's a bit embarressing when ya want to reverse

What's left of the grille is still in the yard, suffice to say even I couldn't repair it I will post u a pic of it.

how's me nut?well i tightened down the plastic dome nut,i assume that's the one ya mean,it's stayed tight but if ya life the lever up too much the gearstick just swivels around but doesn't come away in ya hand.could something be missing?

Check, very carefully, if the nut is cross threaded, it sounds like its not going all the way down to the box, that's why the lever comes adrift.

you were right mutt's it's cross threaded.i managed to tighten it down enough to keep the lever in place so quite happy.
