Hi Everyone I've got a really weird Problem, I bought a set of MK1 rear lights for my mk1 van, and they dont appear to fit as the body hole is too small to fit the light backing plate into! Have I gone mental? I always thought all the rear lights were interchangable? My mk1 had trailerlights stuck over the holes and it looked terrible. Anyone else had this problem?

are you sure they aren't Mk2 phase1 lights? They would be all plasic and 50/50 amber/red. There are various types of Mk1 but any should fit. Until recently Kim (tailgate van) had barn door lights but they swapped over no probs. Also make sure the holes aren't fouled by anything used to fit the wrong lights.

The rear lamp apertures are the same from 1965 all the way to 1985, only the actual rear lamps changed. I cant see why the lights wont fit unless the body has been altered

you know what? I said the same, until I tried to fit a phase1 rear light to Alex. Theres nowhere to screw in the bottom screw as theres a notch in the bodywork that corresponds to the clip at the bottom of the light.....

Yeah, but the aperture is the same size.

Arrrgggghhhh!!! I thought so, but mine are definitely standard size apertures as they haven't been altered at all, and the lights are mk1 too as they have chrome surrounds, and the holes would line up, if it would fit!!!!

Iam stumped on this one. Can you load up some pics? You can do this directly from your computer to the forum using the attachment button, same idea as attaching to an email.

Hi I'm trying to load the pics, but the files are too big! The Back of the lights will not go into the holes in the van, the bit where the bulbholders are is too thick. The light units are definitely mk1 as they are chrome and have the door rests in the middle, the holes for the screws line up ok too. The back of the van is totally factory, but the holes for the rear light to slip into are too narrow. I'm so confused I unscrewed the bleeding things from a mk1 too althoughh it was an early van 1967 and mine is a later van 73-74. Attachments:

are those the actual lights? The bottom one is for a Mk2 phase1 as I suspected. The van you took em off must have had a slight alteration. Either you need to do the same, or look for the right lights IE Mk1 ones. Personally I dont think they would look right on a Mk1

I had the same problem with my '68 van i brought new rear lamps dated '69 and they wouldnt fit so they must have changed late 68-69. So i have a pair of new boxed 69 lamps if anyones interested!. Ralph .

Hi guys The pics were samples only, the cast one looks wider than the plastic MK2 one, or is it a trick of the light? Ralph were yours too big or too narrow? obviously I can swap you a set I guess yours were too big? Now since my Trannie may have been built over here, there may be slight diffences, so the question is are the early apertures big, or small? Any way you can take a look Fred? I dont really want to cut the hole bigger, but I may have too. Maybe I should just buy your set Ralph and make them fit, how much do you want for them?

personally I would say alter the hole. Its bound to be just mm and you wont tell with the lights in place. As long as they are Mk1
