Hello everyone, i'm Peter from holland, so when my english is wrong here and there, you know why. I just finished restoring a transit mk1, which did belong to a german fire department, and has only about 14000 miles on it. Despite the low milage, the engine was broken, and had a bad camshaft and some badly worn away valve tapets, and worn timing gears. so i overhauled the entire engine, put new timing gears in it, and put the engine in the van, and it starts and runs, but there's a strange rumbling/ratling noise coming from the engine. So to keep a long story short, i took the engine apart again and there's nothing to see, and that worries me, because now i have to put it together, without knowing what the problem is, so i made a small video, and i would like to ask if someone here, did hear this sound before? The noise appears only when the engine is warm and only when you let go the throttle.
Thanks for welcoming me on this forum. @ Muttley, What do you mean with denting the sump? And the timing gears do make some noise that should dissapear after 700 miles or so, but i can't imagine that the rumbling sound in the video comes from the timing gears. And i wil check the plate between the engine and gearbox, but i don't think that that is the problem.
Happy new year! I was away during the holydays, so i'm back now, and i did rebuild the engine again, but i'm still worrying about the strange rumble the engine makes. I did look up what denting the sump means, and it isn't dented, so that can't be the problem. I did check the gap between the gear on the crank and camshaft, and that is 0,25mm. So is that normal or to much?
Hi mate and welcome to the forum. Wrong sparkplug heatrange (too warm or too cold sparkplug) can affect the way engine sound but as far as I can tell from the video I do not think this is it. You can change the plugs with the correct ones just to make it shure though. The noise seems to be more like a valve clearance noise (too much play) but as you say that you took the engine apart it' unlikely . Can it be that you do it wrong? I mean are you sure you have the correct play values? Also you can try to locate the noise more accurately in the engine using a mechanics sthetoscope or the old fashioned way using a wooden handle file. That might narrow the posibilities.
Hi Bacdava, today the engine runs again, and the ratle/rumble got even worse. I gues that the new timing gears are rubbish, so i'm going to find an old set of used gears. between the large gear on the camshaft and en one on the crackshaft, there's 0.25 mm play, and i gues that's the problem, because everything else is in perfect order. I took the engine apart at the engine shop togehter with the owner, and there was no unususal wear or play to find, so it must be the timng gear. Btw the small ones are from steel and the large one on the cam, is from aluminium, and they told me that the gears would make some noise, that should go away after 700 miles or so, but i can't imagine that the had this sound in mind. I know how gears can wine, but this is not a smooth winingsound, but a nasty rumble like a wasted connecting rod bearing or a worn camshaft, but we checked all that twice now. Here's a vdeo from 2 days ago where you can see how much play that 0,25mm looks and sounds like.
Now that i'm thinking about it, i'm going to call motormobil.de again ( bought them there) and ask how much play it may have, and if it's to much, i'm going to demand that they send me a new set, and this time the old fashion fiberglas ones, because they werent available when i bought the ones i have now. And otherwise i'm going to offer them that i buy a new set, and if the rumble is gone, they have to take the metal ones back and return my money, and give me a new complete engine gasket set for free, because due to their inferior parts, i already had to buy a new set, so 100 euro's down the drain. And not to mention al other cost i made to find out the problem, like clean filter, new oil again, forgot to drain the gearbox to when i pulled the engine again, so more oil needed, and coolant fluid, so at least another 100 euro's, so a little compensation isn't too much to ask i gues.
Fancy a chinwag? This live chat box is just for you!
