Bugger. I suppose that's cos of the grey imports. I love the way the RR crowd like to bandy about having a Q plate is a badge of honor, cos of the SVA. Try insuring em I say......

for what reasons would it be on a q plate?i see on the dvla site it was registered in 88 would that be right ? There's a fair chance that it's ex- British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) Irish Ex-BAOR vehicles were given Q plates because they weren't new when registered here. A lot of them were brought back from Germany by servicemen, and ex-servicemen.
The rumour goes that the Provisionals were quite enthusiastic about popping little bombs under Q-plate cars on the basis they were likely to be driven by servicemen or their relatives / friends. Insurance companies saw the chance of the car being blown up as a risk too far. Whilst car bombing has stopped, insurance companies aren't taking any chances.

It might have run on trade plates for a while, it may have been stolen and recovered.

I'd start by asking the seller if I were you Irish, if he thinks you're likely to buy it, I daresay he'd be as helpful as he can. Specially if you remember PS & Qs and use a bit of Blarney. .
