After the thread about 'anti german firevans' it got me wondering how many people actually have one in the UK? And whether its original or modified? Post a pic of your German fire vans below. This is mine an early mk2, 27k km's (17k miles) from new. As it left Germany, no plans to change it except a twin passenger seat (if I can find one) and maybe an overdrive unit in the future. Totally original Pinto powered

I heard that the early Toyota crown had a separate electrically controlled OD that bolts to the back of the box. Speedo will be stuffed! Anyway back to fire trucks. What other transits are there in Germany?

Crikey its amazing how each one is different in terms of trim etc, puts pay to the "another German Firetruck"!
Ok I tried to load some pics but photobucket has let me load them but thats it, I cannot see them to post them! So three ways of doing this, go to my photobucket page, look up zephyrman. Thats me! Or give me 45 mins and I will load them on facebook. My name is Gary Ranson, find a profile pic of a guy in a loud shirt behind the wheel of a Zephyr convertible, thats me!
Or maybe someone could copy and paste my pics because I can't? Technolololgy for ya!

The only one in NZ, imported by a friend of mine, then sold to another friend of mine. Lovely condition It's a 1969, pedals thru floor. Has anyone noticed the headlights on these are an odd size? They are 180mm instead of 7", and the bezels and buckets are different to the UK ones. I would own one of these vans in an instant, if the shipping charges were not so high. I did consider buying the van above when my friend sold it, but was not in a position financially to do so. It would have made economic sense to do so though. As anyone who has restored a rusty car knows, it is generally much more expensive to restore a rust-bucket (if you have to pay someone else to do the work) than it is to buy a nice rust free example. At least in the way the UK Transit vs. firevans are priced, it certainly makes economic sense to buy a firevan. The attitude towards LHD vehicles in NZ is a little different to the UK I think. There are restrictions on the importation of LHD vehicles here, so there are not very many. They are considered a bit more exotic and not frowned upon in any way. And regarding the driving experience, I have an American Ford Econoline camper van, (it's BIG!) and do not have any problems driving it here. You just need to reprogramme the brain a little bit every time you jump in it for a drive. Overtaking not such a big issue either, as you can see over most car roofs. I actually like driving LHD, (I race an old BMW M3 which is LHD) I find the driving position more natural, changing gears with the right hand.

Where I bought the 74 and 65, I got to park them alongside each other. The difference on the front endis amazing! Bonnet profile and leading edge arc is different to a, headlamp bezels are shallower on a 65, early vans have the rhd mount, the location of the bonnet stay! Its great nurdy stuff!
I was considering doing the rhd conversion but I don't wanna mesh with the dash and I like the rod operated clutch. I doubt they even did a rhd rod clutch mechanism, let alobe find one! These vans look great! Be proud!

I like that one of Ralph's, probably because its not all polished and looks like its worked for a living (I mean that in a good way) LHD probably isn't that bad in a Transit as at least you have a decent view of the road over the top of most things in front.
