brakes vary quite a bit on the LWB Mk2's. You can have two pot calipers with solid discs, four pot calipers on solid discs, and four pots on vented discs. The two pot calipers are pretty crap, even when rebuilt with new pads.

Hi Conrad, yes I've got two pot calipers and they are new but might have to go for and upgrade.

find a pair of Transit 4 pots for solid discs, and they will go straight on and give a big improvement. The vented discs will give the same stopping power, but much less resistant to overheating and fade.

It should do 60plus with the OD box surely? My Fire van with the worst ratio 5.83 rear diff does 50 easily the engines just working hard, OK it's a low mileage (17k) van but still...
You sure your brakes aren't binding? Could explain a lot?

No brakes aren't binding, its the gearing 58mph and the engine is screaming its bits off!
Fred, you say your brakes are good, is that with 4pots?

Is your Overdrive actually working then?
Mine with no overdrive (currently) and a 5.83 rear diff is screaming at 50mph (around 4500rpm) the Overdrive is supposed to drop the revs by around 20% so really even with my diff it should be revving at around 3700rpm at 55mph.
Are you positive the Overdrive is actuating, it does sound to me like it isn't.

Overdrive is working fine, without it we are screaming at 50mph. So another 20% would be 60 so thats about right.Perhaps there are different ratio's available in the 4speed as well? Also checked how accurate the speedo is with the sat nav' and its okay. A 4.63 diff is the way to go as there won't ever be a huge weight in it. Jas

I'm hopefully getting an overdrive box from an early mk3 Di so be interesting what that's like once I fit it.
Apparently a mk6 crown wheel and pinion fit our mk2 axles (see my thread on the other forum) a guy on there has done it, gonna be the quickest way to get a 4.63 rear diff of you are handy with the spanners.

The Laycock overdrive boxes all gave a 20% overdrive. The type 9 box had a 0.83 5th gear, so 17% overdrive. I can't remember the 5th gear in an MT75, but I think it was 0.8x?
All 4th gears in all of the Ford boxes are 1.00:1.
4.63 ratio will be another 20% less revs at the same speed compared to the 5.83.

So an overdrive and 4.63 back axle will give a nice cruising speech and enable decent motorway speeds.

So an overdrive and 4.63 back axle will give a nice cruising speech and enable decent motorway speeds. it would give you 3120 rpm @ 100kph (62mph) and 160 kph (100mph) at 5000rpm.

That's almost like a modern transit. Would make it much better for long journeys.

Then you find out the standard pinto hasn't got the power to pull that gearing unless you are absolutely empty.....so you hit a hill and you are down to 50mph with artics millimeters from your bumper...... The trick MT75 gave a final drive of 0.76:1 (I think anyway - it might have been 0.72:1) there is a thread on the other forum about what you need to buy and swap oddly it wasn't expensive Some info here: www.maddoldbugger.supanet.com/gearbox.html
