Is it going to have to carry any load or do any towing?

No that's exactly the auto box you don't want you can't make it work without the Lucas Epic injection pump ECU on the Diesel engine.

Firstly, what body are you planning to put on the chassis? A flatbed or dropside will have no drag and won't add much to the GVW. That in itself will mean you won't have much traction during acceleration due to it being rear wheel drive. The 2L pinto is the slang term for 1996cc Over Head Cam spark ignition petrol. It was offered in the mk2 with an auto but it's very rare. Most pinto powered transits are 4 speed manual or 4 speed Overdrive. Can I ask why you need/want an auto?

thinking about it some more, I think the ST170 was a Duratec engine, and not a Zetec! Is the engine block alloy or cast iron? If it is alloy, then it is a Duratedc, and the bellhousing bolt pattern is different to any RWD box. This would mean an aftermarket bellhousing will have to be purchased, and fitted to whatever auto box you are going to run.
Nope, just did some googling, seems the ST170 engine was the earlier "Zetec" iron block engine, with a special Yamaha head, but dubbed "Duratec" just to confuse matters! So Pinto/Kent bellhousing bolt pattern as previously suspected.

Don't jump in buying bits you might not need. speak to whoever you have in mind to do the conversion then come back to us to see if they're talking sense. The duratec is a great lightweight engine but will be pricey to put in.

Zetec is a better value for money choice. but there are popular ones and less popular zetecs for reasons that I know nothing about

Hi Guys, to answer a few questions Are you carrying any load or towing? Not proposing to carry any load or tow with it but it is a pickup so I need the capability to do this.
What sort of body are you putting on it? Not sure yet but I was thinking of a wooden dropside so that I can have some additional weight over the back axle
Why do I need/want an auto? I just want an auto, and I have a bad back which an auto box helps. I drive an auto with my company car and therefore want it in my Transit
Let me know what engine and gearbox I can go for and I will start searching ebay
Thanks
Paul

Does it need to be petrol that 2.5 TDi and auto box would go straight in more or less and would go pretty well, if you get all the bits you could use the the immobiliser etc

Get a Mk5 donor and do the whole nine yards. Engine, box and IFS.

Just looked at the picture of your truck again, just realised it's the flat front so ignore what I said about the Di it's not going to be a simple job fitting a different engine. Have a look at Jono's pinto engined flat front mk1 camper pictures. It's tight everywhere under the bonnet. When Ford fitted other engines they used the bullnose front to get extra clearance, otherwise you are going to need to cut the bulkhead to fit it further back

Hi Guys
Whatever I do I dont want to start cutting the bulkhead about etc and I also dont want the bull nose. I havent got the skills to do that The bull nose I just dont like Im bloody picky I suppose so im limited to whatever I can put in whilst keeping the body and engine bay standard
If I could find a company that does this sort of thing I would rather contract it all to them and at least i know I would get a pucka job and most importantly it would be safe
So to sumarise, should I be looking to just get a box that fits to the ST170 or should i be looking for a pinto with auto box
I get confused because some people say that any ford gearbox should fit to the Zetec (ST170) but clearly I cant because the bell housing does not match the engine. If I could get a new bell housing I would be OK (i think) and then its just physically getting the engine and box in and running
Thanks everyone
Paul

How about doing the back body then running it standard for a few months so you can see the areas you would like to improve?
